Dizzy Reece's "Soundin' Off"

Can anyone comment on the quality of the remastering of the JRVG reissue of Dizzy Reece's Soundin' Off? Also, what is your opinion of the music itself? How does it compare with Starbright and Blues In Trinity? Thanks in advance.

This is a really good disk musically. A rare trumpet quartet record from Blue Note! The JRVG is fine and clear, though I find the balance odd, with the trumpet a little under-present and the bass too full. Even despite my usual JRVG reservations, I'd say buy this one.

yup. and the only reason for me to pick that Select up, as I have both Conns and a TOCJ of Star Bright.

All very good stuff, so my expectations on "Soundin' Off" are pretty high!

I have the TOCJ of Soundin' Off and it sounds very good to me. It's an excellent session - I prefer it to Blues in Trinity due to the single horn. Its a great showcase for Dizzy's playing.

I agree with Ralphie except that the TOCJ doesn't sound quite so good as most TOCJs, at least to me. But a great session, and good to hear Dizzy with rhythm.

where did you hear about a scheduled dizzy reece mosaic select?

I don't think it's scheduled or even confirmed by Mosaic, but it's been mentioned as a possibility. It would make a nice Select.

Reece does a lot of Cherry-esque fluffs and things like that here; it's an odd date, especially considering the instrumentation. All of his BNs are excellent...

Yes, the album will definitely be part of the Mosaic Select that's forthcoming at the end of March. I know many here are wary of Ron McMaster's audio work, and he's had a hand in a number of the Selects--so you might want to go for a Japanese version if you're in the anti-McMaster camp. (Assuming he's doing the Reece set.)
