Aggie87
I saw the full name of the fake girlfriend in the Te'o hoax for the first time. It's Lennay Marie Kekua. I don't know if they planned it, but Leukemia is a portmanteau of it. I don't know about Polynesian (which she was supposed to be), but Kekua is a very unusual Hawaiian name. They might have taken it from Kealakekua Bay. I read somewhere that in the neighborhood where Tuiasasopo lived/lives, a few doors down is a family with the name Kekua. I bet he just "borrowed" it from them. Here's one link that mentions that: http://www.dailymail...o=feeds-newsxml Edited January 20, 2013 by Aggie87
Blue Train
Just when it couldn't get weirder. A lawyer from the O.J. Simposon case has entered this and claims it was Ronaiah Tuiasosopo on the phone with Te'o all that time. Then there are these voicemails. I don't know about you, but if this is Ronaiah Tuiasosopo he's wasting his talent on alleged hoaxes. http://deadspin.com/...dium=socialflow Edited January 25, 2013 by Blue Train
RDK
While a hoax (one way or another) was any actual crime committed by anyone involved? I hear a lot of the participants are lawyering up, but what possible legal repercussions are there, if any? If he's innocent, I wouldn't fault Te'o for punching Tuiasosop in the face... repeatedly. With due respect to quarterbacks Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Collin Klein of Kansas State, Te'o deserves the Heisman Trophy for what he did on the field and everything he does off it. For the way he embodies everything that is right about a sport full of too much wrong." --------------------------- haugh, today---http://www.chicagotr...,1090901.column "America can look away now. The next time we need to see Te'o is in gray shorts and a T-shirt next month at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Let the debate shift soon from what role Te'o played in a sad, sick stunt that also fooled his parents to the one he will play on an NFL team like the Bears, who still should consider drafting him. Give the butt of so many over-told Lennay Kekua jokes and snarky tweets ample time and space to get serious about playing pro football. Remember, that's all Te'o is: a football player. He isn't a coach, public official, clergyman or any other kind of professional whose behavior merits the kind of national scrutiny an amateur student-athlete's has undergone. The only person who died in this story was fictitious. Nobody committed a crime, which wouldn't generate as much interest among NFL teams. Te'o committed sins of omission and those seem to be the hardest for the public to forgive." Aggie87
"Te'o committed sins of omission and those seem to be the hardest for the public to forgive." That comment also presumes that Teo isn't complicit in the whole hoax. If he was complicit, and his "heartwarming story" almost won him the Heisman and undoubtedly would have raised his draft status (if the whole fiasco hadn't come out), then his sin - to me anyway - is far worse than a simple omission. What will the next player try to do to win the Heisman and up their $$ bankability with the NFL?

Aggie87
if this trick had just garnered him the heisman............... Well, it got him closer than any defensive player ever has gone before. And part of the justification was how good his character and leadership was. Hell, he wasn't even the best defensive player in college football this past season - not by a long shot. That suggests to me the voters looked further than just what his play on the field was, when they cast their votes for him. Heck, Te'o had both NBC and The Mouse backing him to the limit, with that kind of "help", you knew he was going finish way up there. And maybe that was the whole problem, NBC & ESPN took a story, and ran with it all the way to the bank, Te'o couldn't back out even if he wanted to, given the blanket coverage they gave him, especially in the run-up for the BCS Championship game. The NCAA & BCS are all about $$$, the story made them money, and they could give a darn about whether it's true or not -- they got their ratings. On to the next story that pulls in the numbers, and the networks don't care how it damages some teenager. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Johnny Manzie this year, he seems to be headed for the media meat grinder. Blue Train
1. Not sure why you're only singling out only NBC and Disney. Not a single media outlet involved bothered to do even Journalism 101 @ any point before Deadspin did their job for them. 2. Considering how Manzie has been going out of his way to help the meat grinder. 3. Has anyone looked at the picture of him with Couric and he's supposed to weigh 255. 4. Interestingly, Couric basically told him he was Forrest Gump several times and the one thing that upset him/or that he showed any actual emotion to was she asked if he was Gay? 5. I don't know if he's Gay or not, but in this day and age when you rather have everyone thinking your Forrest Gump...

I suspect they all won due to that moreso than pure defensive skills. But yes, you're correct. Teo is the highest vote getter who was purely a defensive player, I believe. Interestingly, Couric basically told him he was Forrest Gump several times and the one thing that upset him/or that he showed any actual emotion to was she asked if he was Gay? Manziel's different from past Heisman winners, in the sense that he just turned 20, and just finished his first year of college ball (other than his redshirt year). So he's young (2nd youngest to win the Heisman after Mark Ingram), and will do alot of his growing up with more cameras on him than a normal college player would. Especially if he ends up playing college ball for 3 more years. But I agree, Manziel has being doing plenty in the public eye that seems questionable - the gambling, possible drinking etc. He just did a video with the "Dude Perfect" guys that is actually kind of amazing and worth a watch if you haven't seen it: On your other comment - Teo not only isn't gay, he's "double plus un-gay", whatever that means!! Matthew
1. Not sure why you're only singling out only NBC and Disney. Not a single media outlet involved bothered to do even Journalism 101 @ any point before Deadspin did their job for them. I single out ESPN because when Gene Wojciechowski interviews Te'o, gets nothing Te'o about the girlfriend, does not bother to contact the family, and engages in shoddy journalism by not doing any kind of background work -- and that is not my opinion, but the judgement of his peers, they deserve to be singled out. There's no way that someone can expect good reporting out of ESPN or the major networks, they just have way too much money invested in the "sports product". When's the last time ESPN broke any recruiting scandal? or take a deep look into college football programs? They can't and won't, they have too much of a monetary interest in the status quo. The money is unbelievable right now, the LA Dodgers just inked a 7 BILLION DOLLAR tv deal. 7 Billion dollars???? That's crazy. What reporter on the new Comcast RSN is going really go after any story that makes the Dodgers look bad? No one is, that's who. I love sports, but it's really becoming a cesspool right now -- both college and pro.

I love sports, but it's really becoming a cesspool right now -- both college and pro. But it was Pete Thamel and Sports Illustrated that put him and "her" in the spotlight. Thamel also admitted he didn't bother to follow-up because Te'o told him "her family" didn't want to talk. After that it was an avalanche of anti-journalism 101.Just for the record it's Time Warner and not Comcast that signed the Dodgers to the $8 billion deal that is written in a way to screw the rest of the MLB (and once again any fans of the teams/leagues with their own regional channel who doesn't have Time Warner.) because of the "naming rights" part. No way, I can see the MLB approving it as it stands now. Of course, all the smaller teams will just pocket the money and continue to put out Sheeeeeit! product....but that's another discussion. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo apparently went on Dr. Phil (who has his own issues) and claims that Te'o wasn't involved. It would probably be believable if he didn't still allegedly insist it was him on the phone all the time. Even though other members of his family claim the voice provided (scroll up and listen to them and get back to me on who really deserves an Oscar this year if that's a man) by Te'o was yet another Tuiasosopo who happens to be female. Big Wheel
Also in the Dr. Phil interview Tuiasosopo more-or-less admitted he was gay before retreating to "I'm confused". I still think the most likely scenario goes something like this: Tuiasosopo and Te'o are (or were) indeed lovers and one of them - I can't decide who - is the brains behind the coverup. Everything up to this point has been relatively successful at keeping the damage limited. Although Tuiasosopo has had to bear the brunt of the blame, as well as come out and risk hell with his minister father, Te'o has been successfully shielded from having to deal with the worst of the fallout. The phone records and voicemails were selectively released, and nobody asked too many questions why. The former didn't list any dates after the supposed death of Lennay Kekua, which means we don't know whether or not contact with "Kekua" really ceased when Te'o says it did. And obviously the "voicemails" could have been fabricated by Tuiasosopo and his cousin well after shit started to hit the fan. Last thought - is Ronaiah Tuiasosopo really so secretive that he could become obsessed with Manti Te'o, carry on a fake romance with him for a year, and yet never say to any close confidant "I'm in love with Manti Te'o but it's really f'ed up and he thinks I'm a girl"?
