John L Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 (edited) Strange, but Judgement has never really clicked with me. I like it, just don't love it. Black Fire, Smokestack, Compulsion (and, of course, Point of Departure) are probably my favorites. I have been really enjoying Blue Black lately. I had never heard it before until last month. Rooster_Ties Posted May 8, 2003 Author Report Posted May 8, 2003 I listened to both "Dance With Death" and the 2nd LP of "One For One" today, and I plan to listen to them both again tomorrow. As I mentioned in another thread... ...as long as I'm not expecting to hear the kind of "Charles Tolliver" I'm most used to hearing, I'm otherwise quite happy with both of these dates. In particular, side one of the 2nd "One for One" LP (the session without the string quartet) has the makings of a really fine album. Shame the other tunes from this date didn't turn out, otherwise I think they would have made for an album every bit as fine (and just as accessible) as "Grass Roots". I also mentioned (in another thread) that both of these albums would fit on one CD (total time = 79:10), so that'd make for a tasty Conn release someday. ( PS: I should mention that at various times in the past, I've gone back and forth about liking "DwD" and "OfO"(LP2) to varying degrees. I've always thought they were both at least "OK", but sometimes (when I'm in the right mood, or right frame of mind) I find I like both of these albums nearly as much as anything else Andrew did on BN. But I certainly don't always think that, every single time I hear them. Perplexing, indeed. ) One other quick thought specifically about side one of the 2nd LP of "OfO" (meaning the side without the string quartet). Today I put my finger on what seems truely unique about this side, among all of Andrew's BN output (and beyond). It has a very "Strata East"-ish vibe going on with it!!! Damn, what a whole string of Andrew Hill albums on Strata East (in the early 70's) would-have/could-have sounded like??? Yeow!!!!!!!! Quote
Clunky Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Not having the Mosaic set, I really hope "Andrew!" and "Compulsion" see the light of day soon on CD. Votes above would suggest they are well worth it. Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 13, 2003 Report Posted May 13, 2003 I voted for Smoke Stack. Does anyone know if Andrew!!! has ever been released on CD other than the Mosaic? Japan maybe? Me want. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 13, 2003 Author Report Posted May 13, 2003 I'm pretty sure it hasn't. Not 100% sure, but 98% sure. Come to think of it, I don't think there are any Andrew Hill albums that have been released on CD in Japan, that haven't also been released in the U.S. - or if I'm wrong about that, somebody please correct me. Late Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 First post to this board! (After four years at the BNBB, I finally reached the hallowed 1,000 post mark. A few days later — of course this old news — the board went tumbling down. Now it's back to square one.) I voted for Involution. This album, along with Andrew! has always been my favorite Hill. Rivers seems to have an intuitive sense about Hill's music, and the compositions seem to me to contain some of Hill's most poignant, while perhaps less complicated, writing. The titles also seem to add a lot to the session's overall feel. In addition, the rhythm section (with Richard Davis noticeably absent) is a nice change of pace. This particular quartet session, more than any other Hill session I've heard, continues to pay the most handsome dividends. There's always something new to explore. Even the occasional moments of harpsichord begin to feel essential. I'd love to hear others' perspective on this one. Now ... what I really want to hear is that unissued trio session with Ron Carter. Glad to have joined the group, Late Quote
sidewinder Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Late - welcome to the Board! You are absolutely right re: Rivers being well matched to Hill's music. There is a 'serpentine' quality to River's style - probing, checking all angles, taking left field, 'out but not that far out' - that allows him to exploit the many twists and turns in Hill's compositions. .:.impossible Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Good to see you here Late! Well I've managed to acquire a copy of Andrew!!! I'll comment once it arrives and I've had a few opportunities to listen. I am still mad at myself for not putting the money down for the Mosaic set. Quote
Eric Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 (edited) I voted way back when and have no idea what I voted for. I actually had and LOST the Mosaic Hill set, so I have not had much of a chance to listen to Compulsion. All these albums are obviously interesting listens. The ones I enjoy the most are: Black Fire, Andrew, the One for One quintet (off lp) and Dance with Death. The ones that don't really do it for me: Grass Roots, Lift Every Voice (I can't get past the voices) and Smokestack. I did make a burn of Involution before I lost the box and I should go back and listen to it ... Edited March 12, 2006 by Eric Quote
Kalo Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 (edited) I voted for Black Fire as favorite. I might have voted for Bobby Hutcherson's Dialogue if given the chance (CD version has four Hill compositions, two from Joe Chambers, none from Hutcherson). For most interesting Hill on Blue Note, would it be cheating to pick the Mosaic Select? Edited March 13, 2006 by Kalo Quote
ep1str0phy Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I voted for "Judgment"--I've found it consistently engaging over the years, the sort of devil-may-care, fury-fed pulse-raiser that only comes around once in a discography. A lot of Andrew's Blue Notes are tinged with the fervor of revolution, but "Judgment" has a 'special' sort of feeling to it; maybe it's the vibes/piano/bass/drum combo--the personnel definitely has something to do with it--but there's something preternaturally 'rhythmic' about the whole thing... like watching a space age drum circle gone ballistic. It's a beautiful thing. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 I voted for Black Fire - Henderson really gets those harmonies right on. Never got that into Compulsion or Andrew!!! - too distant in approach - but as Chuck would say, "I suggest you try again." Quote
sal Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 A very difficult decision....like choosing a favorite limb. If forced, I'm going with "Black Fire". Quote
B. Goren. Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Thank you BM for reviving this thread. My vote goes to Black Fire. Quote
johnagrandy Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Is it near impossible to get ahold of the Mosaic CD set ? I notice nothing on e-Bay. An Amazon seller has one for $375 ... but it's not even mint condition. Why doesn't Mosaic re-issue those sets that have stratosphered ? Quote

I would like to see Compulsion and the Hubbard/Henderson session come out on CD (plus the one with Sam Rivers). I believe these three are the only ones from the Mosaic set that have not come out on individual CD (now that we have the Hill Select). Edited March 16, 2006 by Eric Quote
johnagrandy Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 The Hill Mosaic CD set hit eBay today and was gone in minutes ! $250 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=ADME:B:SS:US:1 Quote
