wolff Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 any favorite otis redding songs?? ← My favorite may be Amen(found it on an Atlantic Best Of Soul LP). I have no idea which album it's on and I think I own them all. Next, would be Down In The Valley off of Otis Blue. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 i believe Amen is off of The Immortal Otis Redding LP June 20, 1969 Quote

wolff Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 i believe Amen is off of The Immortal Otis Redding LP June 20, 1969 ← And before that, maybe a B side to a 45 that never made it to LP when he was alive???? Pretty amazing artist, that Otis. If I may wax enthusiastic regarding Mr. Redding. I have this one amazing Otis LP. Good To Me: Live At The Whisky A-Go-Go, an import licensed by ACE, from Fantasy in 1993. All other Redding titles sound unauthentic and watered down compared to this bad boy. IMO it is one of the few live albums that remotely convey the live experience, off key trumpet and screaming females and all. I pretty much have to strap myself in before cuing this one up. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 29, 2005 Report Posted June 29, 2005 i'm burning this from e-music i had downloaded this cd long ago Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted June 29, 2005 Report Posted June 29, 2005 It was the Bar-Kays, not the Mar-Keys, who died with Otis. http://www.sl-prokeys.com/stax/stax-mclemore.htm is an interesting web site by a later session player at Stax, Sandy Kay as he was then known, who just hopped on a plane in May '69, showed up on McLenore Ave. and talked his way into a job playing keyboards! (he did notice that they kept his tracks well isolated at first...) I bought the first Stax box for roughly $60 when it was new, maybe the best money I ever spent. My fav's are the obscure things like "Yank Me Doodle" by a bunch of guys Packy Axton met at the bar that night... Quote

Soulstation1 Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 anyone pick up the new 2 disc 50 songs release? Quote
Dave Garrett Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 anyone pick up the new 2 disc 50 songs release? I thought about it, but couldn't see a compelling reason to double-dip since I already have the three big box sets. Costco had a bunch of them for $12.99, though, which is a good deal for anyone that's interested in this set. Quote
zen archer Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 I bought one at Circuit City for $11.99 and it came with a FREE STAX T-Shirt !!!!!!! It sound's GREAT ! Quote

RDK Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 I can't find tickets for them ?....i did see they are in LA with Isaac for a Stax 50th concert celebration. Hey, I was there too! As for the thread, I recently picked up the second volume, sans box, for $25, and I'm digging the hell out of it. I can't say it's "better" than the first box - which is chock full of stone classics - but in some ways I'm liking it even more, if only because I'm less familiar with the later Stax tunes and thus so many of the cuts are coming at me as the most wonderful surprises. I hear these tracks and I'm thinking, "Damn, why haven't I heard this before?!" Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I'm (still) definately a first box (Atlantic distributed period) sorta guy, but I did recently pick up a CD of Wm. Bell's later singles, I've always loved "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" strings 'n all, and think he may be the most under rated guy to have worked there. IMHO, the early stuff is the 'most unique' and if it's a little ruff 'n (not quite) ready, that's part of the charm. "Banana Juice" anyone? Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 gonna see booker t tonight      Quote
Van Basten II Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 Amazon is selling the volume 2 for 71 bucks and you can get volume 3 with it for 150 $ Seems a good deal, since they are kind of rare to find. http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=U...01&plpage=1 The Chet Baker set is not a bad price either. Thinking about getting the Atlantic set in the same package, what's the consensus about this one ? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ER&v=glance Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) Thinking about getting the Atlantic set in the same package, what's the consensus about this one ? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ER&v=glance Be sure to get the 1991 8CD Atlantic box (the one you linked to), it has more tracks than the 7 individual CD volumes that were issued in the 1980s and it also has the correct takes instead of the wrong ones that were used on the 1980s discs. The sound is excellent; the remastering was done by Zal Schreiber and Steve Innocenzi. Highly recommended! Edited August 23, 2008 by J.A.W. Quote
