John Tapscott Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 (edited) Everything I have ordered from Mosaic (including purchases in the last few months) has come via Canada Post and I have never paid Customs on a Mosaic order. Ditto. Edited to add- I have paid customs on Mosaics in the past, but not for 10 years, at least. Edited August 23, 2013 by John Tapscott Quote
B. Clugston Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Everything I have ordered from Mosaic (including purchases in the last few months) has come via Canada Post and I have never paid Customs on a Mosaic order. Ok, that's good to know. I'll give them a call today and see what they say. I've never had customs charges on a Mosaic order either. Quote
bogdan101 Posted August 24, 2013 Report Posted August 24, 2013 They changed something recently, my latest order was sent through something called Asendia, which if I remember correctly was handed off to Canada Post. There's also online tracking info. Quote
RiRiIII Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Second time that my order is lost. They sent me a replacement received today - Tyner and Hill #16 selects. Quote
king ubu Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 Damn, wanted to use a gift card on my Mosaic order but didn't see where the hell I could have entered it ... send them a mail hoping they can still make use of it. Otherwise I'm kinda pissed ... they hand out gift cards but have no place where you can actually enter the number? I see on the card it says I have to order by phone or mail, but how inconvenient is that, I know NSA has my credit card anyway, but still, and doing international calls is still rather expensive in this country ... crap! Quote
king ubu Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 As usual, they're great ... and will be putting in my coupon code before charging my card Quote
David Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Picked up the Tolliver Big Band Select, the Mulligan Select, and the Lloyd single. I'm a huge Lloyd fan, so I'll know I'll enjoy that disc. The only material I already have is the earlier mono Gerry Mulligan Songbook release, so I have much to look forward to. Was (and still am) on the fence about the Chu Berry and dropped it from my cart at the last instant. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) Looks like the Gerry Mulligan Select is now on 'Last Chance'. I've ordered it and the McCoy from the 'Spanish Connection'. Edited September 4, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
king ubu Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 The McCoy is mighty good! I knew much of it beforehand and knew so much of the Mulligan (all but the Annie Ross and the unissued material) that I still haven't really explored that one ... but it is nice to have all those fifties Pacific sessions pulled together in one place. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 The McCoy is mighty good! I have all of it on vinyl and most on CD but it will be good to have the 'Cosmos' stuff on CD. Some great music on this Select. The Mulligan is much more of an unknown entity to me. Quote
colinmce Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 The Mulligan is wonderful, through and through. One of my favorite Mosaic products. Quote
mjzee Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Another vote for the Mulligan; I thoroughly enjoy it. Don't overlook the Cohn, Newman and Green if you like Basie-type small group swing. I wish I could love the Bechet more, but there are too many alternates for my tastes. And a big thumbs up for Art Blakey - Hard Bop; probably the best of the Jackie McLean sessions, with beautiful sound. Quote
king ubu Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Hm, I think there's better Newman (the Swingville with Frank Foster is magnificient!) and Cohn. Nothing against the Select, it's nice and all, but as so many RCAs, it's a bit on the light side (or on the side of: producer calling a very strict regiment). Quote

You're right, this Basie-like RCA material is a bit light/samey, even though the individual musicians may be excellent. Quote
king ubu Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 As far as Basie-like stuff goes, my vote is for the Quinichette albums (Prestige and ... uhm, Mighty Quinn ... Capitol or where was that one from?), they really are a nice bunch, all four of them! Cohn has done some great things, of course, but I hear those RCAs on the good rather than very good (not to mention great) side. And again, the Joe Newman with Frank Foster is magic! This one: Quote

One of the best of the Singles IMO - and they did a very good job with the sound. Essential.. Is it my imagination or has the Bechet returned from the dead in 'Last Chance'? David Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 Daggone it, I had no interest in Hard Bop before; now I'm wishing I included it with my last order. Quote
