Shawn Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 (edited) Movies played a larger role in my life this year than they have for awhile, I think I saw more films in 2012 than I have in the past few years combined. I was quite pleasantly surprised how many of them were either really good or at least pass-the-time enjoyable. Independents made the most impact on me...while the big-budget Hollywood films were much more hit or miss. A couple caveats about my list. 1. I don't watch many Foreign Language films so expect to only see English Language movies. 2. I have yet to see a few of the more talked about films of the year (Argo, Lincoln) Anyway, without further ado here is my list of Excellent/Good/Disappointments from 2012 (in no particular order). Best Silver Linings Playbook The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Safety Not Guaranteed Liberal Arts Ruby Sparks Skyfall The Cabin In The Woods Looper Moonrise Kingdom Salmon Fishing In The Yemen End Of Watch Avengers Ted Haywire This Is 40 People Like Us On The Road The Dark Knight Rises Pitch Perfect Flawed but still enjoyable: The Five-Year Engagement Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World Prometheus Deadfall Butter Snow White & The Huntsman Dark Shadows Damsels In Distress The Campaign Worst: Resident Evil: Retribution The Amazing Spiderman Lockout Total Recall The Apparition Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Edited January 12, 2013 by Shawn Quote
kinuta Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 (edited) I'm going to have to be honest and say that Flight was probably the most impressive mainstream film I saw. I also thought Arbitrage was excellent and curiously unmentioned. I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, I didn't like it at all but agree on Liberal Arts, that was excellent. In the dudefest-kick ass dept. Dredd was the clear winner. Edited December 31, 2012 by kinuta Quote
PHILLYQ Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 I thought 'Argo' was excellent, likewise 'The Master', different flicks but both delivered in a big way for me. 'The Avengers' was a blast, just get that bucket of popcorn and let it unfold. Quote
BruceH Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 Let's see... Lincoln The Avengers Argo Jiro Dreams of Sushi Skyfall Robot and Frank Django Unchained Searching For Sugar Man The Central Park Five Wreck-It Ralph (yeah, I liked it; so sue me) Quote
Shawn Posted January 1, 2013 Author Report Posted January 1, 2013 I finally caught Skyfall today and loved it, added it to my list. Quote
BillF Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 I have access to a lot of non-American cinema here, so my list looks like this: Elena (Russia) Barbara (Germany) Killing Them Softly (US) Shadow Dancer (UK) Prometheus (US) The Kid with a Bike (Belgium) El premio (Argentina) Rampart (US) The Descendants (US) Margin Call (US) Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 Living in small town in the middle of nowhere means that most of these movies I've never heard of, except here. Only caught two this year, Avengers and Skyfall. Neither of which were classics by any stretch, but on the other hand, they weren't total shit either. Quote
gmonahan Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 I thought "Lincoln" was wonderful. I'd add the amazing little movie "Bernie" to the list--a surprise for me, since I'm usually no Jack Black fan. And while I enjoyed the performances in "The Master," I thought the movie itself was a bit aimless. I avoided the really bad ones this year, well, except for "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter," which I may be alone in considering to have been goofy fun. But then, I'm something of a "sucker" for vampire movies. gregmo Quote
king ubu Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 I've not seen many, but Haneke's "Amour" was great. And I have highest hopes regarding "Elena" which just - finally! I had given up hopes! - made it to the movies here. Quote
kinuta Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 (edited) Margaret ( directors cut) - Kenneth Lonergan (2011) No spoilers ! A must see and in my best films of the year list. Yes, I know it's 2011 but I'll make allowance for the fact that it was unavailable for ages. Edited January 1, 2013 by kinuta Quote
BruceH Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Oh yes, add "Bernie" to my list. Really liked that. Margaret ( directors cut) - Kenneth Lonergan (2011) No spoilers ! A must see and in my best films of the year list. Yes, I know it's 2011 but I'll make allowance for the fact that it was unavailable for ages. I asked for this for Christmas, but didn't get it. Will see sometime. Quote
