I have the Disconforme reissue from 10 or more years back and, to be frank, it's a dreadful transfer, especially what was side 2. Very, very muddy.

Better to wait for one of the labels putting this stuff out slowly to do it properly.

I agree with you about the sound of this, Bev. I wonder why Vocalion haven't picked this one up?

I suspect that the Disconforme was a needle drop. Vocalion have re-issued so much of the Argo catalogue that it is suprising they have not latched on to this one. A good companion piece to Michael Garrick's 'The Heart Is A Lotus'.

Most of those Argos only sold a couple of hundred copies in original form. For example, Garrick's 'best seller' Argo - 'The Heart Is A Lotus' - was about 1000 copies I believe. I suspect the number for 'Edge of Time' is quite a bit less than this.

It was reissued on LP quite recently by a Catalonian label called Wah Wah - legally, by the way. Norma Winstone herself provided some new liner notes. She states she was not too interested in seeing it reissued but changed her mind, something like "let them have it if they want it so bad" (my interpretation of her words.)

Which brings me to another topic: why do people pay insidious sums of money for records that are reissued (sometimes repeatedly). I can understand someone paying a lot for Hum Dono or Afro Jazz, since those have never been available since they were released a long time ago. But to cough up thousands for original Blue Train or Kind Of Blue, I do not understand. It's not really about the music anymore, is it?

Oh, Wah Wah - they've done a number of psych/Krautrock reissues. I always assumed their stuff was booted but clearly I'm wrong. Hope she got paid decently.

Original Blue Notes and so forth generally sound really good, but I'm with you - I'd rather cough up the dough for something that hasn't been reissued than something that is more easily available. Most of my BNs are 60s/70s pressings or Japanese, same with Prestige/Riverside. I don't care too much about FMP or ESP addresses, either... but some sweet private-press or small-label joint, I'd like to have the original.

Whether or not you pay the premium is going to depend a lot on your playback system. If you are set up for high-end vinyl playback then - probably yes (unless it is one of those $xk in demand Blue Notes - forget it. NY USA and the like - more justifiable). If CD/MP3 biased then a definite no. Horses for courses.

I can see the appeal with 6-Eye Kind of Blue as there is a sonic premium. Admittedly not huge over the 2-eyes though. Which is why I'm more than happy with a 2-eye of that one.
