clifford_thornton
When I first heard his music I was absolutely NOT interested (my dad was/is a major fan). I came to appreciate it later and am glad I came around.

clifford_thornton
Sometime I will get my dad to properly recount the story of going over to the Brubecks' house in Norwalk and playing their piano with Dave, four hands on deck. JSngry
He was the kind of you you just figured was going to live forever...seemed to be blessed like that. I've been up and down and back and forth with his musics, but what always comes through is that this was a good, decent man, not at all fooled or trapped by his success. If only for that,, Brubeck FTW. RIP, and thanks.
colinmce
Yes Jim. One of the humblest, most even personas in jazz. I for one love his music, so consistent is it. I look forward to listening for the rest of my days, so thanks Dave.

neveronfriday
The last of my heroes to step into the afterlife. They are all gone now. I started listening to his music when I was 4 or 5 years old, and I will continue to do so until they wheel me out of the ward, head-first. Thanks for an entire lifetime's worth of fabulous music and musicianship.
Big Beat Steve
For along time I dug mostly his early pre-Desmond quartet music (Octet and Tjader/Crotty trio) and came to appreciate his more "classic" stuff (that's all over the place and tends to be taken for granted) piecemeal later on. At any rate, some really interesting music there. RIP and Thanks! You outlasted most of your detractors!
alocispepraluger102
wkcr radio is now playing his music; http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/wkcr/ my favorite brubeck performances were brandenburg gate(with chamber orchestra) and elementals, from about the same time. ejp626
He was a bit of an entry point for me (in my dad's LP collection) and I'm still a fan. By the time I started seeing live jazz, it was basically too late for me to see him in any kind of intimate setting (well, maybe he played smaller rooms in New York), but I managed to see him probably 5 or 6 times in concert halls or at Ravinia. To have had that energy at his age -- and to keep promoting young musicians at his gigs -- is remarkable. RIP
Cyril
RIP Dave He was 91, one day shy of 92, and en route to a regularly scheduled cardiologist appointment at the time.

Peter Friedman
Sad news indeed. I was fortunate to see the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond about 3 or 4 times. I recall a time back in 1957. I was in the US Army stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and saw an announcement that the Brubeck Quartet was doing a concert in Wichita fairly soon. I found a friend with a car, and we drove the roughly 125 miles one evening to attend the concert, and then drove back to Fort Riley late that night after the concert. It was a terrific experience and Paul Desmond was particularly in great form.
BeBop
I met him a couple of times at MIlls College (not when he was a student there, but as a returning alumnus). Nice guy. I enjoyed his music, but I'll miss his blindfold tests/listening comments too.
Roger Hiles
Sad news. He followed his own way in jazz and his music has enriched our lives. Still, going out at 91 (almost 92) after back to back wins in the Downbeat reader poll, and the success of "Their Last Time Out", as they say, what a way to go!
