peterintoronto Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Thanks for the heads up on the Clean Feed sale! I found 15 real gems. Quote
colinmce Posted January 29, 2015 Author Report Posted January 29, 2015 Yep, I went in for more. So much for my earlier statement! Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth - Deluxe Stephen Gaucci Basso Continuo Convergence Quartet - Song/Dance Tamarindo - s/t Scott Fields - Five Frozen Eggs Lisa Mezzacappa's Bait & Switch - What Is Known Sonic Openings Under Pressure - Muhheenkatunk Quote
xybert Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 Harris Eisenstadt - Golden State ll Now showing on Eisenstadt's website with a release date of March 10th. There's a sample track! http://www.harriseisenstadt.com/albums/golden-state-ii/ Line up this time around is HE w/ Michael Moore, Sara Schoenbeck and Mark Dresser. Slightly disappointed that Nicole Mitchell is not there this time; the combination of her sound and Schoenbeck's sound really gave the group a unique frontline flavour, not to mention the fact that they totally kicked arse together. This is a must buy for me, and i'm sure that Michael Moore will be excellent, but that Mitchell/Schoenbeck combo was truly special. Quote

I had similar feelings when I saw that Mitchell was replaced with Moore. I saw this band live and it was a special performance. I agree that Moore is a worthwhile alternative, but the overall sound of the emsemble will be significantly different to me. Quote
colinmce Posted February 10, 2015 Author Report Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) In a confusing turn of events, it appears the last 10 CD titles issued by FMP will be (re?)released in the US on February 24. Dusty Groove also lists some of these as Coming Soon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_date_2?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A5174%2Ck%3Afmp%2Cp_n_date%3A1249114011&keywords=fmp&ie=UTF8&qid=1423609975&rnid=1249111011 Anyone know what's up here? Yeah, that link is wonky. If you search FMP > CDs > Coming Soon you'll see the 10 in question. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Ah I see. Yeah, all but the kora I have and can vouch for - got 'em the first time around. Quote
xybert Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Most excited about the Rasmussen/Corsano duo. Mette is the shit: You're not kidding. I'd never heard of her before today. Watched the clips you posted and a bunch more on youtube. Would love to hear the opinion of someone that can better articulate themselves on musical matters than i can: can she seriously play or what? I mean, she is NOT just blowing for the sake of it. It strikes me that she has a rare level of confidence and command.... conviction is the word i'm looking for! She has me convinced by what she is saying, which is rare. Her playing really grabs me. I'm seriously impressed. Apologies if i'm going over the top and inducing eye rolls but... wow! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3Cl_fWxMpA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kNmxRXvX3k Quote
mjazzg Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 I saw Trio Riot play about three years ago or so. http://efpirecords.com/artists/trio-riot/ They were good and Rasmussen was impressive but not overly so. I'll be interested to watch these clips to see where she's at on them Quote
colinmce Posted February 11, 2015 Author Report Posted February 11, 2015 I saw some clips of that group. Kind of laced up, not really too interesting. She's much more impressive in freer contexts. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Watched a few clips of her last night. I really liked the duo with Corsano as well as the outdoor solo piece. I will keep my eyes and ears open for her. When I see Kevin, I'm going to place an order for a few of the newer Relative Pitch CD's. Quote
jlhoots Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Try Silke Eberhard if you haven't. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Delicious, and refreshing. Quote
alankin Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Does anyone have any of these Clean Feed titles? Ricardo Gallo -Tierra de Nadie- The Great Fine Line Jason Stein- Locksmith Isidore -Three Less Than Between Jason Stein -Locksmith Isidore- A Calculus of Loss Scott Fields- Dénouement Quote
colinmce Posted February 11, 2015 Author Report Posted February 11, 2015 The Steins are worth your while. Three Less... is probably the stronger if you're getting just one. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 I'm a fan of Stein's A Calculus of Loss. So much so that your post has prompted me to order the other one at its currently ridiculous price, thanks for the nudge Quote
Leeway Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) I saw Mette live up in Brooklyn this past summer, and I think she's the real deal. I found her playing pretty cool. More hesitant about Corsano; he's been dull the last couple of times I've seen him. I'll grab that disc. though. I think I posted something in the live thread about her back then. PS: Here's the write up of Mette's June 11th concert at I-Beam. (Keir Neuringer was the first set): Second set was Danish-Norwegian (born in Denmark, living in Norway) alto sax player, Mette Rasmussen, with pianist Craig Taborn. Metteplayed with assurance and deployed an extensive saxophonic vocabulary, but seemed just as interested in composing a narrative as in demonstrating technique. In what might be a trend, Mette also used a fair amount of movement and body language while playing. (Gustafsson does too, now that I think of it). Taborn, by the way, gave yet another "all-in" performance on piano; he's really quite exciting when given the range. I'm seriously looking forward to seeing Mette again. I think she will be in Philadelphia today and New Haven tomorrow (?). Edited February 11, 2015 by Leeway Quote

clifford_thornton Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 yeah, I also like the NotTwo quite a bit. Quote
relyles Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Yeah keen as for the Shipp Duke album, looks like that'll be my first new release of 2015. Shipp's on a roll, the group's on a roll, and the connection with Ellington is mighty tasty. Link to the label's site here: http://web.roguart.com/shop/album/id/85?symfony=92b3498277ab9c3f86c82a62379855de Samples are now available on the Rogue Art website and they sound really, really good (obvious low quality files on the website aside). Quite excited for this. The Shipp disc is excellent. I received it last week and listened to it a few times already. You hear the Ellington, but you also get the Shipp. The combination of the two is captivating. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 yeah, I also like the NotTwo quite a bit. Yes, I'd forgotten about that one, must get it out (gets shelved elsewhere because of the oversized NotTwo sleeves) I'd love to see him live Quote
