I ordered mine direct from bandcamp from the US. It showed up in about 10 days with my normal mail, no problems at all.

I have 'Wood Blues' still unopened, waiting until I fully absorb the box set

I will say though that I gave it a few listens on Spotify before I was able to buy it, and when I finally put my LP on last week I found the flipping to be very distracting. I've had a couple of their other LPs and didn't mind it, but it really took me out this time around. Would much prefer it on CD.

Switching gears, I got a note about this in my email today. Digital only at the moment, but BG's notes refer to it as a CD, so I am hoping physical copies will be available soon:

CD available. Ordered.

I’ve seen Angelica transform 2 shit pianos into concerto sound at two very hot Tony Malaby gigs earlier this year. Rainey helped, of course:)

I saw / heard Sanchez just once, it was a Harris Eisenstad's band with Eskelin. Don't remember if it was a trio or there was somebody else as well. Sanchez seemed to be sulking and her playing was trite. Will check out this new one with Guy & Lopez, their other piano trio with Agusti Fernandez is fantastic.

I've only listened to Sanchez recordings and I can't say that any have really stood out for me. Was there a duet with Wadada? If so, I liked that

Surprising. Yeah her playing is more “jazz” based that what I usually like but her demeanor & attitude has been great when I’ve seen her in any short interactions I’ve had with her. And she gets along great with her ex which says something.

Well, you see them in NYC where they can roll out of their beds to go to a gig. I see them after flights, train rides, crappy hotels, jet-lags and being forced to spend a lot of time with their bandmates, etc. This might account for a difference in attitude.

Meanwhile, I listened to that Sanchez-Guy-Lopez album on Spotify, it's really nothing special, IMHO.

If you want some new Barry Guy with a pianist, this one, released on on ECM last month, is better:

I've been looking forward to this one. It's been taking its time making it to the US but looks like it should be available finally next month.

Unexpectedly, there is a new Happy Apple CD (recorded in 2020, as I understand)! Their last one was released 17(!) years ago.

At first listen, this one is not as good as their previous ones - but good stuff nonetheless.

Saw them a bunch when I lived in Minneapolis for a spell, thought they were good at the time but I'll admit it's been... about 20 years.

Recall one gig where they were joined by François Corneloup -- this was the festival that Jean Rochard of Nato Records had -- and that was a very strong set indeed.

Darius Jones - Legend of e'Boi

Think I saw this mentioned on the FreeJazz blog. I've been enjoying it on repeat for the past few days.

Coincidentally, was listening to this one (well, first two tracks) a few days ago in order to decide whether I want to go see Jones live. Well, I am not going. I thought Jones's playing was extremely robotic - no variation in sound, intonation, no nuance whatsoever. Very narrow expressive palette. Both the tunes and backing from drums / bass also sounded quite basic (again, I got as far as the second track only). This is what I imagine AI would come up with.

I have some old Jones' CDs and I remember liking them when they were released; got to revisit them soon. Might be candidates for culling - I need some space for that John Lennon "Mind Games" box.

It's not all negativity here. I really enjoyed this recent release from Travis Reuter (whom I never heard of previously):

Among many positives (Mark Shim!), isn't it nice to hear Tyshawn Sorey in expansive bashing mode?!

I saw Darius Jones recently at OTO with the usual OTO rhythm section. It was enjoyably aggressive, with enough to keep the interest going, but not necessarily that subtle or 'new'.

Those earlier records are still really good, I think.

Who's that? Edwards / Sanders?

That's right, although here I think it was Steve Noble rather than Sanders, which is probably among the things that elevated it.

Nothing wrong with Sanders, but Noble has an added rhythmic sense that keeps things from being too languid and improv-ey.

Edwards/Noble is my Oto rhythm section. I like Sanders a lot too mainly because he is more improv-ey.

I had a ticket for that Jones gig and was sad not to be able to attend. I like the early albums too.

Both Noble and Sanders are great (for very different reasons). Edwards is definitely good, but I can't say I enjoy his playing that much. Regarding bassists, the other day I was listening to an old Lol Coxhill / George Haslam album and there is a fantastic British bassist on it, Steve Kershaw. What a great DEEP sound.

I think Edwards deserves credit for range and rate. He is so experienced in improvising that he can play whatever is needed. Arguably that is faint praise (like when older rock fans praise a "session musician"), but it is what I see as his key skill. He is an asset in any performance.
