I'm never sure about Collier but there are some records on which he's been very good. Thanks for bringing it to the attention. How are you liking it? 🙂 Edited March 7 by Vaudevillian wrong text Quote

Clearly, it is breathing the spirit of Coltrane quite strongly, but now moving towards 1967 Coltrane, with an edge of Charles Gayle. I truth I like Collier here a little more than Parker, who I blow how and cold on. The Collier I really liked, and which did surprise me, is that I AM record. I strongly recommend that if you haven't heard it yet. Very visceral stuff. Otherwise I've always had my suspicions of him. He certainly looks the part. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 By the way, has anyone heard anything really inspiring in the last couple of months? Any new names to look out for? Quote
Niko Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 I really liked the new Alexandra Grimal / Giovanni di Domenico record... I knew some of their earlier work but this is better imho (much broader, also, with organs, electronics and things... ) Quote

For some reason, they name their album and songs in Japanese, but I don't know why. it's one of the reason I miss the liner notes. Well, that's because I'm listening to it on Spotify... I actually bought the CD after streaming it quite a bit... doesn't come with any liner notes... Giovanni di Domenico has recorded quite a bit with Akira Sakata - but that doesn't quite explain the Japanese song titles... Quote
Jason Bivins Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 Best things I've heard are a pair of new Barry Guy releases and the John Surman on Cuneiform. Quote

Clunky Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago A few recent arrivals Kris Davis Trio---Run the Gauntlet----(Pyroclastic) Sentient beings---- Truth is not the enemy----(discus music) The Exu-----s/t---------(discus music) All excellent in very different ways. Discus releases seem to come from all over the categories of music ( always good/excellent) but these two are solidly in the jazz tradition. Kris Davis is an absolute favourite of mine. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted 3 hours ago Report Posted 3 hours ago I never really "got" Kris Davis. Her work seems a little inconsistent and not always that groundbreaking or energetic. Particularly when there are so many pianists out there. Do you have a favourite record of hers? I'm prepared to see the error of my ways. Quote

That almost exactly describes my blind (deaf) spot with her, even in ensembles except Paradoxical Frog Quote
