Darius is great live. I’ve heard him play stuff I’ve never heard on record.

fwiw you dudes are spoiled (but not as much as I am) with Edwards/Sanders & Edwards/Noble

I’m upset that Cleaver isn’t in NYC any longer and I don’t get to hear Lopez/Cleaver. Best combo along with Lopez/Peterson. Hoping Mat Maneri puts together a few shows this fall with his great quartet with Lucian Ban. Saw them 5 times last fall.

I do hear Ches Smith, Tom Rainey all the time and I never take it for granted and even once in a while, Randy Peterson

I saw Ches 4-5 times the last few weeks

As far as bassists, some good younger ones finding their way: Henry Fraser, Kyle Motl, John Moran, Ana Abondolo, etc.

also Sean Ali is great

Brandon Lopez is the best bassist in NYC

posted on the live shows thread: Nels Cline with Susan Alcorn & Booker Stardum last night was incredible. Mind blowing. Astounding from a variety of standpoints.

Well, Mark Helias is still active, right? He's got a new solo one, btw:

Yes I’ve seen him fairly often the last 2 years. Playing as great as ever.

As far as “jazz” bassists in NYC, Helias & Hebert are the best. Brandon Lopez is a great “jazz” bassist but besides his playing in Mat Maneri’s quartet, most of what he does is abstract improv. Untouchable in those areas. Genius.

I saw Darius Jones recently at OTO with the usual OTO rhythm section. It was enjoyably aggressive, with enough to keep the interest going, but not necessarily that subtle or 'new'.

Those earlier records are still really good, I think.

Anything in particular you'd recommend? I'm still partial to the latest one...although I do get the criticism about it being quite basic. I don't know, sometimes I like stuff like that. A palate cleanser, maybe? (wasn't my interpretation of it the first time around but that could be the explanation, in hindsight)

The ones I liked most were Big Gurl and Mannish Boy. I assume those are the early ones to which others are referring as well. Those are by now classic albums, as far as I am concerned. Great cover art and great music.

I've been exploring Discus Music's output lately. It's highly varied but high quality consistently.

Today it's a Paul Dunmall. I've only a couple of  discs with him on ( Fanfares & Freedom with Laura Jurd on Discus). Red Hot Ice is quite James Brown or JR Walker in parts. A fair cast mostly unknown to me other than Martin Archer and Corey Mwamba. I really like this

Dunmall has a huge and varied discography, a lot of which is very good. I haven't caught up with that one yet but another fairly recent one on Discus was a nonet with Julie Tippetts, very good indeed

Second printing box has been shipped to me. Now I only hope it arrives. 😎

Ahmed box arrived safely. So far read the 90 page "book" & played 4 of the 5 CDs. Challenging for sure, but worth it.

We talked a bit about The Wire upthread a little. I have purchased a few recent issues and it seems to be improving in quality. Less of the near-AI institutional artspeak increasingly reviews that aren't afraid to be critical.

Suddenly there is a new AALY Trio recording, first one for 25 years!

It's on Silkheart: https://silkheart.bandcamp.com/album/sustain . Unlike all previous AALY Trio recordings, this one actually is a trio, just Gustafsson - Janson - Nordeson, no Ken Vandermark. Listening to it for the second time in a row - excellent album, mostly on a subdued side. It's such a pleasure to hear woefully rarely-recorded Peter Janson in free jazz context again - what a master! He gets this mesmerizing deep singing sound from the bass like no one else.
