Д.Д. Posted August 2 Report Share Posted August 2 I saw / heard Sanchez just once, it was a Harris Eisenstad's band with Eskelin. Don't remember if it was a trio or there was somebody else as well. Sanchez seemed to be sulking and her playing was trite. Will check out this new one with Guy & Lopez, their other piano trio with Agusti Fernandez is fantastic. Yeah her playing is more “jazz” based that what I usually like but her demeanor & attitude has been great when I’ve seen her in any short interactions I’ve had with her. Well, you see them in NYC where they can roll out of their beds to go to a gig. I see them after flights, train rides, crappy hotels, jet-lags and being forced to spend a lot of time with their bandmates, etc. This might account for a difference in attitude. Meanwhile, I listened to that Sanchez-Guy-Lopez album on Spotify, it's really nothing special, IMHO. Well, I am not going. I thought Jones's playing was extremely robotic - no variation in sound, intonation, no nuance whatsoever. Very narrow expressive palette. Both the tunes and backing from drums / bass also sounded quite basic (again, I got as far as the second track only). This is what I imagine AI would come up with. I have some old Jones' CDs and I remember liking them when they were released; got to revisit them soon. Might be candidates for culling - I need some space for that John Lennon "Mind Games" box. It's not all negativity here. It was enjoyably aggressive, with enough to keep the interest going, but not necessarily that subtle or 'new'. Those earlier records are still really good, I think. That's right, although here I think it was Steve Noble rather than Sanders, which is probably among the things that elevated it. Regarding bassists, the other day I was listening to an old Lol Coxhill / George Haslam album and there is a fantastic British bassist on it, Steve Kershaw. Rabshakeh Posted October 15 Report Share Posted October 15 (edited) I think Edwards deserves credit for range and rate. He is so experienced in improvising that he can play whatever is needed. Arguably that is faint praise (like when older rock fans praise a "session musician"), but it is what I see as his key skill. He is an asset in any performance.
