Head Man Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 (edited) This UK label is re-issuing some very fine music at the moment; both jazz and soul/funk obscurities. Full details here: http://www.jazzmanrecords.co.uk/v2/default.asp?s=b3nw3j497634& I recently bought a number of their compilations - "Spiritual Jazz Vols 1-3" & "The Best of Jef Gilson" and they really are a treasure trove of hard-to-find music. I've no idea whether the Jef Gilson contains his "best" but there's some seriously good music in the compilation. The highlight is probably his version of Pharoah Sander's "The Creator Has a Master Plan", recorded in Madagascar in 1969 with local jazz artists. Before this release the only thing I knew about him was that he used to own the French jazz label "Palm Records", which recorded and released a number of terrific albums by US artists visiting France in the 1970s. Byard Lancaster, Frank Lowe and Khan Jamal all had some of their earliest recordings released on Palm. I understand that Jazzman Records are currently delving into the Jef Gilson archive, so hopefully some of those records might see the light of day in the future. As well as the compilations they have also released a couple of other jazz obscurities - "Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble - Hard Luck Soul" & "Bobby Jackson - The Cafe- Extraordinaire Story", neither of which I'd heard of before I bought them. They are both well worth seeking out. Edited November 23, 2012 by Head Man Quote

Head Man Posted November 24, 2012 Author Report Posted November 24, 2012 The Nathan Davis is good Yes it's an excellent compilation, but I do wish someone would (re)release the albums in their entirety. Quote

I found volumes 2 and 3 to be really disappointing in comparison to volume 1; perhaps because the emphasis was on rare European jazz, but given what was being produced at that time, it should have been stronger. Head Man Posted December 3, 2012 Author Report Posted December 3, 2012 Following one of MG's links in another post on the blog I came across details of a proposed re-issue of Hannibal Peterson's "The Tribe" here: http://www.kindred-spirits.nl/release_detail.php?idxItem=67840 Does anyone know anything about Kindred Records? They seem to be releasing similar material to Jazzman Records and I wondered whether they are linked to them in some way. Quote
ornette Posted December 6, 2012 Report Posted December 6, 2012 This one interests me: I've got Jukebox Mambo. Nothing too challenging and a great sound. Quote

Jazzman are in the UK and Kindred Spirits are out of Holland, but beyond that I'm not sure. Quote
jlhoots Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 Greg Foat Group - is that any good?? Quote
RogerF Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) Greg Foat Group - is that any good?? Yep, to me anyway, it sounds good. I'm currently listening to the latest GFG album, Girl and Robot with Flowers and this is good, atmospheric, slightly retro stuff and yet still sounding contemporary. The album is dedicated to the late Gordon Beck, a hero of keyboard/leader Greg Foat but the overall sound seems to be slightly reminiscent of Roy Budd - which can't be a bad thing, as he was cut down too early in life. There's also a bit of Brian Auger there too, certainly very Brit 1960s / early 70s influences but as I say, it ploughs its own furrows too, not copyist by any means. Definitely worth checking out here: https://soundcloud.c...-group-girl-and Edited January 20, 2013 by RogerF Quote

Bluesnik Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 Does anyone know anything about Kindred Records? They seem to be releasing similar material to Jazzman Records and I wondered whether they are linked to them in some way. No, they're not connected. And other than some spiritual jazz compilations, Kindred Spirit release a different kind of music. More cutting edge and less jazz. Maybe they have some more compilations out now, like you say. I haven't followed them in some years. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 15, 2013 Report Posted February 15, 2013 This one interests me: I've got Jukebox Mambo. Nothing too challenging and a great sound. Just in case anybody's interested: This is also available as a VINYL 2-LP set. Not listed on amazon (at least not on amazon.de) but where I picked it up (yeah, at a real brick-and-mortar record store - one of the last ones locally) it wasn't that much more expensive than the CD at the "going" Amazon rate + shipping. And of course this format allows the booklet to be presented much better. Quote
