mjzee Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Saw this on Amazon...This set brings together the albums Special Edition, Tin Can Alley, Inflation Blues and Album Album. Quote
BFrank Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Looks like a MUST-have to me. I love those albums! Quote
JETman Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Finally brings Inflation Blues into the digital age! The box was originally slated for Dec 18th, but now I see that it has been pushed back to Jan 15th. Oh well. Maybe ECM was bought by Sony Quote
mikeweil Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 (edited) Nice idea - that was a very good band, even better when I saw them in person. That could become my first ECM purchase in years Edited November 22, 2012 by mikeweil Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 I've heard 3 of the four albums here - Inflation Blues being the exception (so I'll be getting the box!). The first, self-titled, album is an absolute classic. Tin Can Alley and Album Album are both very good though not flawless. According to Steve Lake over at Jazz Central Station, ECM is also on the verge of releasing a 6 CD box of Paul Motian's early ECM albums: Conception Vessel, Tribute, Dance, Le Voyage, Psalm and It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago. I believe Ethan Iverson is writing the liner notes. Quote
colinmce Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Whoa, awesome re: Motian. Great news. Quote
felser Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Looks good to me. I liked his next band, New Directions, even better. Quote
BFrank Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Amazon has it available for pre-order at around $30. Looks good to me. I liked his next band, New Directions, even better. That was the previous group, actually, but a favorite of mine, too. Lester Bowie! Quote
JSngry Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Lived with these albums in real time, always enjoyed them, but always wanted stronger (relatively speaking) bass players. Seems like the whole thing could have gone to another level with that. But, not my band, and still, good, often excellent music. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I love Jack, but these never really did that much for me. Quote
JETman Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Yes, the re-release of the Motians are a much bigger cause for celebration --- at least the first five. Adding "It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago" is a curiosity at best, though. Quote
7/4 Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I'll probably pick this up. Hopefully an Abercrombie box with Arcade, M & Abercrombie Qt is in the works too. How about some live dates from that era with Abercrombie? Or something special from Ralph Towner? Quote

How about some live dates from that era with Abercrombie? Or something special from Ralph Towner? The initially planned set containing the Abercrombie/Towner albums was cancelled. There are still rumors that ECM is considering an Abercrombie set. I would definitely be all over that! Haven't heard anything regarding a Towner set, though. It seems that record companies are more apt to move things along once an artist passes, unfortunately. Quote
king ubu Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Both good news to me, though I'm also more in favour of the Motian set, if it then happens. I have the first three on LP or CD and they're very good (well, "Conception Vessel" is rather okay to good than very good, but Charles Brackeen and David Izenzon are effin' Charles Brackeen and David Izenzon, dig?). Having Ethan Iverson write liners is a fine idea - his write-up on Motian was most enlightening, I found! Quote
JETman Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 To the 2 jokers upthread: The rub with the Jack set is that it reissues an album previously unreleased on cd. All of the Motian albums have been on cd. Abercrombie and/or Towner sets would be no-brainers in my mind, but maybe they are waiting for them to die. Dig? Quote
colinmce Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Huh, I didn't know the Motion/Brackeen/Izenon albums were on CD. ECM is tricky; such a jumble of LP, CD, OOP, reissue, import, domestic, etc. Quote

Got those Motians directly from ECM about 15 years ago when most weren't yet available in the US. Psalm, I think, was the only one which was. Edited November 23, 2012 by JETman Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I wish they'd just release them singly - in my case mp3s will do. Where I don't have any of the records the box is fine. But where there's one I'd like to hear having to get a box set is a pain. I've plenty of cardboard at home. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I have the ECM Touchstones "Special Edition", so I would like to have the other albums in the set so I will probably get it at some point. It would be time Abercrombie's "M" gets released on CD. I heard some of it almost 10 years ago. Quote
king ubu Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 btw, I know about the notion of dead artists being boxed ... but most of the ones ECM boxed are alive and kicking, so the joke's not too funny this time 'round Quote
JSngry Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 ECM boxed with Jack DeJohnette? Damn, I missed that. I bet it was good. I've heard that he's crazy-mad IN-sane, at least when he goes into a record store. Put the gloves on him and put him in the ring and I bet he's even crazier-madder IN-saner. Jack DeJOHNSONette, I'd bet! Quote
