Head Man Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 I remember Chuck posting the news recently that Wilbur's final recording was now available from The Wilbur Ware Institute but unfortunately I can't find the actual posting anywhere. Anyway, I've contacted the Institute and it will cost me $25 to have it sent to the UK. So, before I decide on whether to buy it, can anyone tell me whether it's a good buy......or not. Quote
JSngry Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 It cost me $22 to have it sent to Texas (to where it is currently in transit), so $25 may or may not be as much as it seems. Quote
CraigP Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 Who's on it? I couldn't tell from the site. Quote
JSngry Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 It's the never-issued Frontier session w/Clifford Jordan, Don Cherry, and Ed Blackwell. Are you there yet? Quote

clifford_thornton Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 On my to-buy list, for sure. Quote
Head Man Posted November 14, 2012 Author Report Posted November 14, 2012 Thanks guys.....but is it GOOD!...I know, I know, one man's good is another man's whatever.... Quote
Shawn Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 I'll definitely be interested to hear the entire session. Wilbur is my favorite bassist from the era. Quote
JSngry Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 I don't know if it's GOOD or not. With those people from that time, it'll be pretty hard for it to be "not good". That's why I quit smoking & drinking, doing recreational substances, and started downloading obscure hopelessly records from disapproved sources, so that when it costs $22 to find out how good a session with Clifford Jordan, Don Cherry, Wilbur Ware, & Ed Blackwell is, I ain't gotta worry about did I spend my money wisely or not. Well, that's not the only reason, but it may well be the BEST reason! Quote
JETman Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 With those people from that time, it'll be pretty hard for it to be "not good". With all of the "no-brainers" that have somehow gone wrong in the long history of music, I'm finding it difficult to believe that you said this, let alone said it with a straight face. Quote
JSngry Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 (edited) This isn't some off-day vault-emptying Blue Note session. Ever heard of the legendary-yet-non-existent Frontier label (and not that many people have, so the legend is strong but shrouded)? This is from that. I mean, ok, there's some chance that it might not be "great" (although so few things truly are, so...). But my money's on it being at the very least halfway good, and definitely not "not good". My favorite Clifford Jordan record, bar none, is In The World, and this is of the same time/place/people/everything, so yeah, it's a no-brainer/safe bet for me, even at $22. YMMV, etc. Edited November 15, 2012 by JSngry Quote
felser Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 Yes it's from an early enough vintage (70's) that Jordan, Cherry, and Blackwell were still on top of their games. Jordan's work in the 50's and the 80's didn't do that much for me, but from his Mingus association through to the group with Cedar Walton, love it. Just hope there was sufficient rehearsal/organization time for this session, and that Ware was still in good form. Look forward to hearing a report on it. Quote
JSngry Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Got it today and very much like it. The bass solos are wonderful, especially "By Myself". The group cuts are not "amazing" except in the sense that these people came, had and did this thing, and are now gone, all of which is amazing in and of itself. It's not necessarily a "hit the ground running" thing, but damn does it get good in a lot more than a few places...very "real" like that, it is. And Clifford Jordan, man, he SPEAKS. And Cherry's in good shape too. Blackwell is just a tad slow to get going here and there, but it's just here and there and he never doesn't not get there. If I was to "recommend", I'd say that if the lineup and the time/place caught your attention right away, then by all means go ahead. The vibe is there. If you're not really familiar with all that, then there might be beter places to start (but you'll want to come here eventually). And if you have little to no interest, then this won't change your mind. For certainly, though - it's definitely not "not good". Quote
