I have seen this group a few times in the last couple years so I can't really say "once in a lifetime event" but it sure feels like it each time. This trio combines perhaps the three leading exponents/practiioners of the traditions/approaches of the three great centers of free/out music (Chicago, New York, Berlin-London). DO NOT miss it!

They played here in DC at Twins last night. I'm shocked that us jazz junkies living in the nation's capitol would even be blessed with their presence, but they came, to the most packed house I have ever seen. Standing room only, people on the stairs, going all the way down to the street. They were introduced as "Die Like a Dog Trio", which brought a lot of guffaws from Brotzmann and Parker. They played some solid music for three hours (time includes an intermission). Loved it.

We're actually due a visit from the Brotzmann Tentet in April. (Sans the great Hamid Drake, though, I'm afraid.) I can feel the excitement (my own) building already.

Anyone seen one of the tentets? This particular iteration will include Brotz-Vandermark-Gustafsson-Williams-Bishop-Mcphee-LonbergHolm-Kessler-Zerang-NielsonLove.

Saw them last summer at the North Sea festival. Only difference was Drake instead of Nielson-Love. It was a spectacular set full of sonic variety. Personally, I don't care for the trio--I find too much monotony in the sound and fury. I'm skipping the NY show tonight, and really looking forward to Fred Anderson's visit next month (I don't know whether Aoki or Parker will be on bass).

The tentet is playing here in a couple of weeks.

I've seen both iterations in the last couple years and both were excellent. Parker is always great but I really enjoyed Aoki (at the "On the Run" release gig). I found his repetitive funky grooves kind of new and infectious.

Yeah, I like the chemistry with Aoki in the mix. When I was in Chicago for the jazz festival in 2002 there was an amazing set at the Record Mart Sunday brunch: Anderson-Aoki-Drake get a groove going and they're joined by Ari Brown, Ernest Dawkins & Malachi Thompson.

A friend of mine reported on the NYC (Tonic) gig last night. He was there for the first (10 PM) set. He tells me Brotzmann stuck to clarinet & alto, though he had the tenor on stage, and that it was a more subdued than a usual Brotzmann set, which disappointed some in the audience, but my friend enjoyed it.

An astounding evening of music. Intense and complex and definitely NOT for the casual jazz fan. But a full house and very enthusiastic and they played for nearly 2 hours.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, "This trio combines perhaps the three leading exponents/practitioners of the traditions/approaches of the three great centers of free/out music (Chicago, New York, Berlin-London)" - I couldn't have said it better. A 'must-see' for SURE!
