J.A.W. Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 (edited) (Selects are not viable, but $100 LP boxes of wiiiiiidely available material is?) Like it or not, there's a niche audiophile market for stuff like that. Edited November 7, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
colinmce Posted November 7, 2012 Author Report Posted November 7, 2012 I wonder how well these have been selling. If its apace, then good on them I guess. Quote
David Ayers Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Sadly my deck broke. And I'm not going to replace it. Makes me wonder, if my stereo broke, what would I decide to do? Quote
BeBop Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Some merchants - not necessarily Mosaic, but not necessarily not Mosaic - seem to realize there are sales to be made in the faddish vinyl market. Get while the gettin's good. How many labels are putting out Blue Note reissues on vinyl these days? Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I find it strange that they have introduced and are shipping a new LP box set when they still haven't shipped "The Complete Thelonious Monk Live At The It Club" set that I ordered on February 2, 2012! Quote
BeBop Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Permit them to make some cash. Absolutely. It's they only way they'll survive/prosper. And surely putting the music of Max and Clifford in more hands is a great thing. Quote

JSngry Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Two questions: Why are these being called "Mosaic Singles"?Are these the real covers? Please advise. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Two questions: Why are these being called "Mosaic Singles"?Are these the real covers? Please advise. Those are the real covers. No idea why Mosaic chose to call them "Singles" either. They should be "LP Selects". Quote
king ubu Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 So, will there be a download coupon for the alternate takes? Quote
Jay Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Was this ever announced? I don't remember this at all. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 It seems like this one was out of the blue. Quote
colinmce Posted November 8, 2012 Author Report Posted November 8, 2012 It wasn't. It's great music and a nice package, but ... I still don't get it. Are people really buying these? Again, if they are, I'm pleased Mosaic is getting the revenue, but I just strain to see the market for four straight reissues of music most dedicated jazz fans have already in a non-descript black package to the tune of $100. Maybe I'm underestimating something. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 When was it announced? I admit, I haven't followed the Mosaic site as closely as some. I mean I've gotten the vast majority of their releases through the years, but failed to see this release---until I checked this forum. Quote

Maybe I'm underestimating something. These releases on 180 gram vinyl are aimed at the audiophile market. Members of the Hoffman forum have been buying audiophile jazz LPs (which they call "vinyls") for years now, for premium prices. Many are now OOP and sought after. Especially companies like Acoustic Sounds and Mobile Fidelity have been active in this field, issuing remastered Blue Note, Riverside, Prestige, impulse! and Miles Davis albums on "top quality vinyl" - and some also on hybrid SACDs. JSngry Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I know they're using analog masters to make analog LPs, but are they using digital anywhere in the mastering? Just curious. Quote

Mosaic used digital for some of their early LP sets, but they stopped doing that. It's been all analogue for any LP sets they've released since then. Quote
JSngry Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Hmmm....a totally analog chain using the best available technology...that makes it tempting for this stuff...maybe not cost-effective (enough) for me personally, but...still very tempting...I like the way it was recorded and sounded originally, Imean, Max is a drummer who rewards close listening (sorry, was, RIP, I'm still not fully aware in my consciousness of a Dead Max Roach), so the notion of it being more better than ever is...tempting! marcello Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I've recently heard a live tape of the Brown/Roach Quintet (w/Sonny Rollins) that has never been available. In fact, it's never been out of the owners hands until recently. The sad truth is, although the tape has very good sound, there are incomplete selections. In fact, only two selections are complete. The owner may not sell since he can't fathom why his price can't be met because of the incomplete songs, so it may never see the light of day. Quote
