Matthew Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) Interesting article on the 2013 Yankees: As a Yankees’ fan, I realized I might be headed for a frustrating season when I became dismayed at my favorite team’s failures to sign Jeff Keppinger and Nate Schierholtz. That admission is not intended as an insult to Keppinger or Schierholtz; they are both solid players and deserve the millions they earned from the White Sox and Cubs, respectively. Can you reasonably expect Kuroda to have a career year again at his age, will Petite still be good, will Jeter have another good year at his advanced age, will Ichiro play well all year? IIRC, his first at bat he hit a grand slam! Matsui seemed to have no nerves, in a pressure situation he seemed to be the coolest person in the stadium. I think Bonds is a total jerk, have no use for him at all, but he should be in the Hall of Fame. MLB made a lot of money off of him, and then to get so high and mighty and pure all of a sudden, it's total bs. Bud Selig is probably dancing for joy at the news.... Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 And Clemens only a point or two above Bonds. The thing is its not a one and done situation they get 14 more years. My guess is that next year they both take a jump into the 50% range and within four years both will be in. But if they don't get the votes next year they may very well end up in Sosa/McGuire/Palmiero land and never see induction. The question that comes to mind Matthew is which would be a bigger travesty: if Jack Morris gets in or if Bonds and Clemens never get in? To me it would be Morris getting in, and his pretty small increase gives me hope that he'll actually fail in his final chance next year. Glavine and Maddux are no-doubt-about-it inductees so maybe with those on the ballot maybe Morris can't find the votes. That's happened before, where potentially worthy inductees saw their numbers drop because better candidates who played the same position got on the ballot for the first time. Other notes: I'd say Biggio can book his hotel for next year but if there's any justice Bagwell will go in at the same time. Not sure if he can do it though I thought his vote total would jump more than it did. Quote

Bagwell might still be under a cloud of suspicion. Anyone who says "They all juiced" ought to look at the careers of Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas. MLB Network did a good comparison of Morris and Lolich, who got almost no consideration for the HOF. Very similar numbers and careers, but no love for Lolich. What's Morris' secret? Quote

Matthew Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 Yeah, I'm not sold on Morris as a HofF guy. For me, he's in the twilight zone of a very good player, but not great. There's a lot of players like that from the 70s & 80s -- Al Oliver (who no one talks about ever), Murphy, Dave Parker, Steve Garvey, etc. Speaking of Lolich, he was a very good pitcher, actually had over three hundred strikeouts in a year, and over three hundred innings in a year (which might never happen again). I always thought these "Team Hall of Fame" are a good idea for these players who weren't HofF caliber, but should be recognized none the less. Quote
