That was a bit of hyperbole, even for Mosaic. Whether he was the "most influential" ever is certainly open to question, but he was a superior pianist with a marvelous series of bands, and I'm hopeful it will be a great set. gregmo Quote
JSngry Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 "influential" and "imitated" are probably not the same thing... Quote
Bill Nelson Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 If I were Mosaic, I'd order-up and number 1,000 copies and then sit on 'em for a year or two. After the initial release, I see the Hines shifting units at the same pace as tectonic plates. Quote
Clunky Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 Anyone have any comments regarding the transfers and how they compare with previous releases? Quote

The transfers are definitely up to Mosaic's high standards. I couldn't tell you how they compare to previous releases, though. Quote

SwingItTrev Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 Wait, have people got their copies already? Weird, I haven't even got a shipping notice *anxious* Quote
jazzbo Posted January 11, 2013 Report Posted January 11, 2013 (My computer is dead, I just have a dumb phone, so I've borrowed a friend's computer to say): What a wonderful set. Excellent sound. I'm enjoying the Ellingtonian nature of quite a bit of this material. Quote
anton Posted February 2, 2013 Report Posted February 2, 2013 Did you notice that the sound clips on the Mosaic web site are NOT the same as the final product? Check out the sound clips of 'G.T. Stomp' (alt. take, it seems) and 'The Earl' - they are in stereo and sound like raw dubs. Quote
SwingItTrev Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 I really enjoyed this set (minus some of the balladeering). Great remastering job and some really exciting, propulsive big band. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 I agree. The small group sides and solo sides are hot as well. Great sound. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 A lot of material here that I've never heard before (I think the Hep is the only CD that I have that covers this era, plus an old Sony single-disc compilation), and it's renewing my appreciation for Hines as a pianist as well. Very glad they did this one. Quote
ArtSalt Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 Well, my set arrived yesterday (Friday) in the Netherlands, sent by courier direct from Mosaic on Wednesday, how's that for delivery expedited through customs? Excellently mastered and Earl Hines is undiscovered for me, and I am stll only on the first CD. A very nice weekend ahead for me. Quote

ghost of miles Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 Some brief sightings of Freddie Webster here as well! Quote

Aye, and have you noticed that the custom taxes often are vastly different between couriers on similar items? Had this sent to my work's address as "care-off" and arrived with no customs fees to pay on delivery, but I expect something hefty in the next few days. Still will work out more cost effective than sourcing in Europe from a jazz specialist. The fast delivery never ceases to impress me from the US, Brooks Brothers shirts too can be ordered on a Monday/Tuesday and be delivered by the Thursday. That's generally as quick as the UK with no customs to clear. Quote
mjzee Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 Does anyone love this box? Not "like" or "appreciate" but love it? Quote
Carl Baugher Posted April 29, 2013 Report Posted April 29, 2013 I have the set but am ashamed to say I haven't set aside the time to really delve into it. Soon... Quote
John L Posted April 29, 2013 Report Posted April 29, 2013 I certainly love a lot of this music, but have the master takes of virtually all of it on Chronological Classics. Is the sound so improved here, or alternate takes add so much that it is worth repurchasing the music? Quote
