BeBop Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 (edited) One, please. Some really great music in the 1940s bands, to the extent the recording ban "let it through". And there are rumors of even more things from the Wardell Gray/Kermit Scott/Bennie Green/Willie Cook/Bluebird(?) years than have already been (legitimately) released. Mark Stryker Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Ditto. Great to have this stuff in one place. Still, must say that in recent years I've become addicted to later Hines, especially the solo stuff -- talk about a true improviser and taking chances (!). Wild. But this set: important addition to the Mosaic library. Quote
ghost of miles Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Glad to hear this has reached the level of public disclosure/release date. How many CDs, Hans? Seven? Quote
colinmce Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Huh. I'll look for it in June 2013.I don't want to be rude, and have the utmost respect for Scott and MC but have they made a promised release date in the last 3 years? Why announce unless you're certain? Quote

At this point, I don't think we're working with an "announcement"; rather, there was a conversation... When there's an announcement, I'll start counting. Quote

J.A.W. Posted October 24, 2012 Author Report Posted October 24, 2012 Scott also told me the Hines set will probably be listed on Mosaic's "Upcoming Releases" page in November. Quote

Brute Posted October 25, 2012 Report Posted October 25, 2012 Awesome, I'm in! This will be on my Christmas 2013 list as the Bean Box is on my list this year (well, it was on my list last year). Quote
Clunky Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 Scott Wenzel told me the Earl Hines Mosaic box is scheduled for release in December 2012. It will include Sony-owned material (OKeh, Columbia, Bluebird, Victor, Signature, Vocalion) from 1928-1945. Brunswick and Decca sides included ? . I'm guessing yes and no respectively. Quote

It was part of ARC, same as Vocalion, which was Brunswick's subsidiary before ARC bought the company from Warner Bros. (Unless it's European Brunswick, which was a part of UK Decca and now Universal.) MG Quote

(Unless it's European Brunswick, which was a part of UK Decca and now Universal.) MG Not the complete story. ARC did not buy Brunswick and Vocalion from Warner Bros. They leased the labels for al long as ARC sold a minimum of 250,000. Brunswick records a year. In 1940 CBS who now owned ARC failed to do so and the rights reverted back to Warner Bros.. When ARC leased Brunswick/Vocalion all masters up to December 3, 1931 remained with Warner Bros.. Decca bought Brunswick/Vocalion including pre December 3, 1931 masters in 1941. The Brunswick masters recorded by ARC/CBS remained with CBS. Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 (which is why the early Brunswick/Vocalion material by Ellington is out on a GRP three disc set, "Early Ellington", and the Mosaic - again containing the Sony-owned material - only starts in 1932) Quote
