alocispepraluger102
I'm pleased to say that the old ride cymbal that was taken from Smalls Jazz Club a few months ago was returned to us last night by a person who will remain anonymous. Glad to have it back. My sincere thanks to Charles Ruggiero and Pete Van Nostrand who were both kind enough to supply us with replacements. Thanks for looking out, cats! kh1958
Went to bed at 1:30 a.m. CST, after the cat got up. Projecting what I might listen to over the next week, if I am able: Tonight: The late night set led by Spike Wilner, as Meiissa Aldana is supposed to in the band. Monday night: Ari Hoenig, with Uri Caine on piano. Tuesday night: Smalls Little Big Band--usually led by Frank Lacy, with Josh Evans on trumpet and Stacy Dillard. Wednesday night: Late set led by Noah Preminger. Edited January 20, 2013 by kh1958
clifford_thornton
This might be of interest, but I interviewed Smalls' regular drummer Clifford Barbaro for the March NYC Jazz Record. Interesting dude.
alocispepraluger102
Wednesday and Thursday they have pianist Ethan Iverson coming in with a really interesting group - it's a quartet with saxophonists Tim Berne and Sam Newsome. Playing drums is the legendary Andrew Cyrille. This is, as far as I know, the first appearance of Andrew Cyrille at Smalls and we are eagerly looking forward to hearing him. Ethan always presents challenging and off-beat shows and this one should be no different.
kh1958
Last night, I heard one set by the Ari Hoenig Trio, with Uri Caine on pain. Pretty nice. As was the Sunday late night set, especially Spike Wilner's piano and Melissa Aldana's tenor. Edited January 22, 2013 by kh1958

alocispepraluger102
that's the farthest out i've heard at smalls. i loved it. more of the same tomorrow night. newsome was in rare form. never has their steinway taken such a beating. i pity whomever follows. cyrille reengineered the drum kit. it will take hours to get back to normal. kh1958
I've seen him a couple of times before (most memorably with Mal Waldron and Reggie Workman), but what I heard made me want to travel to Houston next month to hear Cyrille with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman.
