Some time ago, I stumbled upon a website for someone's system of approaches to improvisation. He was someone I wasn't familiar with, but was at least semi-famous and apparently had a long career. The website has testimonials from a number of musicians, including Herbie Hancock.

It is not Schillinger or George Russell.

Any idea who I'm (not) thinking of?

Kenny Werner's book is pretty popular in a lot of circles, but as I understand it, it's more of a mental guide than a musical "system".

Mike Longo has had a lot of books published, maybe him?

Walter Bishop, Jr. studied with Spud in the '70s, as have many other L.A. musicians. Walter also wrote a book on "The Study in Fourths". it is now available on the internet. strangely, it's offered for free from a guy who is selling his own music system!
