JSngry Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Shatner's losing nothing, he's GOT this! That director, otoh, is a damn idiot. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted October 6, 2012 Author Report Posted October 6, 2012 this reminds so much of nonathlete sports talkers criticizing athletes. Quote
Jim R Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Shatner's losing nothing, he's GOT this! That director, otoh, is a damn idiot. +1. Not exactly a Mel Gibson or Christian Bale style of "losing it", and kind of a misleading thread title. Glad I listened, though... that was pretty funny. Shatner worked that guy the way he deserved to be worked. Quote

Dan Gould Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 As a professional voice talent, let me offer the following observations: Shatner is really flat and bored/boring on the first take. The director is correct in his assessment and direction. Shatner hardly changes his delivery at all in the second take, then decides to fuck with the guy and that's fine, he's William Shatner, and it turns out he's a somewhat gifted mimic. But if I was on that gig, not "William Shatner" I'd risk never getting another call from the producer if I can't improve my delivery as directed on the next take. Yet another reason why its good to be William Shatner, bad wig and all. Quote
Noj Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Awkward! I think Shatner proved his point. Quote
rostasi Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Yeah, I'm with Dan on this. I did radio work from '74 to '87 and if I had done the first take as lackluster as Shatner, I would've been asked to liven it up some... and if I had mouthed off in the studio, I probably would've been tossed out. The guy wasn't asking for something unreasonable. Kinda reminds me of the famous Orson Welles radio bit. Alas, Shatner taking advantage of his notoriety. Still, it's funny...in its Shatnerian way. I started my comment then got distracted for a bit, and now it looks lame in the wake of your informed perspective. Quote
Free For All Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Kinda reminds me of the famous Orson Welles radio bit. Bassist Jay Anderson did a record and called one of the tunes "IN July". Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) Kinda reminds me of the famous Orson Welles radio bit. Now that's a classic, I imagine I could find it somewhere but basically Welles was asked to deliver the line "In July" as "IN July," (as opposed to "In JULY,")and Welles really flips out because its totally unnatural to emphasize "in" in that sentence. In his case he wasn't going to suffer a fool. Shatner is just having fun with a guy who doesn't have the stones to stand up to him. Or, instead of giving him the delivery he wanted, change the direction if its not getting the response, like saying "bigger smile" will get you into "more excitement". Shatner sounds like he's smiling only when the tape isn't running. Edited October 6, 2012 by Dan Gould Quote

JSngry Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 The lesson here is simple - don't try to direct somebody who knows their craft if you don't know how to direct somebody who knows their craft . Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 No the lesson here is that Shatner doesn't know his craft, he is trading on his name and the familiarity of his voice. His read sucked and he refused to follow a simple direction anyone who has been in a booth understands, then he mocked the director. Quote

Shatner has a reputation and has had it for many years of being a p - - - k!!!! he is so full of himself. not a nice person at all. his readings were terrible!! and he had to know it. Quote
Jim R Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 I can see both sides of the argument, mainly because I don't care who's correct here. If this is the biggest debate topic going on here today, then life must be pretty good. Quote

Dave James Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 I love the guy. I don't care if he's a jerk. Considering how little actual talent he has, he's done quite well. You've got to give him at least some credit for that. Quote
Christiern Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 Shatner, morphing from Kirk to his present persona, reinvented himself masterfully and I will always admire him for that. Quote
fasstrack Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 That's funny, Valerie. It reminds me of a story they tell about when Sam Giancana met Jimmy Roselli. 'Jimmy Roselll! I heard you was a prick. The way you sing you got the right to be a prick'... And did I mention....DENNY CRANE!!! Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 (edited) I'm totally with Shatner on this one. And he's not getting paid to be top notch voice-over talent: He's getting paid to be William F*cking Shatner. Edited October 8, 2012 by Teasing the Korean Quote
