alocispepraluger102 Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) LINK "A US court is to consider a case that could determine whether digital media files can be resold. One-year-old start-up ReDigi is battling music giant EMI over whether digital music can be retraded after it has been legally purchased. ReDigi says that its software is designed to comply with existing United States copyright laws. But EMI argues a legal principle which allows consumers to resell purchased material goods does not apply. A judge at the district court in Manhattan, New York, will hear opening arguments in the case on Friday after EMI sued ReDigi for copyright infringement earlier this year." Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 The plural of vinyl is vinyl. The plural of LP is LPs. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Interesting. Course, you can wipe someone's disk drive, but not iPod or external hard drive, if they're not connected. MG Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted October 6, 2012 Author Report Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) The plural of vinyl is vinyl. The plural of LP is LPs. aren't 'records' implied? Edited October 6, 2012 by alocispepraluger102 Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I'm not sure vinyl has a plural at all. It's a word like mud. I don't know if there's a specific grammatical term for that kind of word, but vinyl and mud are two of it. MGPS - and oxygen, hydrogen, helium... MG Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I've found the term 'vinyls' a bit odd. Can't recall anyone ever saying they were going to put on 'a vinyl'; yet I see 'vinyls' used quite a bit as in 'I'd never give up my vinyls'. Back in the day vinyl was just what the 'record' or 'LP' was made from. I suppose it became used in a record collecting context as a term for the object that played the music with the arrival of CD. Doesn't bother me - living language and all that. But curious. Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Vinyl is a material things are made of and doesn't have a plural. In this case it should be "LPs" or "records". Quote

JSngry Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 I don't see how a digital file is a "material good" any more than I can see how a smell is a flavor. Quote
