Justin V Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 (edited) I've been hearing her name a lot, but I found her voice to be grating when I listened to the clip. Although I don't listen to many vocalists, I was blown away by Cecile McLorin Salvant at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Her range, tone, phrasing and charisma really made an impression on me. Pete C Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 Ella doesn't make my top 5. to each his own--would you favor us with your fab 5? In no particular order: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day ... and a rotating fifth chair currently held by Jeanne Lee (other occupants have included Lee Wiley & Mildred Bailey, but never Sarah Vaughan).
