BFrank Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) Received this sad news in an email today: Some terrible news: Butch Morris has cancer and is in hospital in Brooklyn. People like Butch are rare in the world. He's a great, innovative artist and a truly loving, kind man. We'll all be poorer in spirit without him in the world. He's in the fight of his life, so please direct your prayers and love his way. Edited September 28, 2012 by BFrank Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Dang. Positive vibes heading his way. Quote
colinmce Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Best of luck and wishes to Butch. I was just enjoying some of his stellar cornet solos on HOME. Quote
Joe Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Was fortunate to witness one of Butch's conductions when he was visiting CalArts several years ago. Best wishes to him; we lost Wilber too soon; let's hope Butch is with us for many more years to come. Quote
robertoart Posted September 25, 2012 Report Posted September 25, 2012 Love Butch Morris's playing. I still listen to Interboogieology and the other Black Saints with Murray regularly. Hope things get better. Quote
Pete C Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 I think Butch pretty much gave up playing cornet for conduction. For me he's beyond jazz, he's one of those true American originals like Ives & Cage. Though for me most of the Murray big band albums are neither among Murray's nor Butch's best work (I like the Murray octet much more). Quote
BFrank Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) I received this follow up email from the same source yesterday, so maybe they're trying to limit visitors: Butch’s Mailing Address It's been amazing to see and hear about the number of people who have gone to visit Butch during these past few days. The man created a lot of love in the world. That may be a greater testament to him than even his brilliant music. However, I've gotten word that the flood of visitors is actually hampering attempts to help him heal from this terrible illness, and Butch's family has restricted visits to his room. For those of who want to express your love and support, please send cards and gifts to the following address. Save your best thoughts and prayers for him. Lawrence D.
