etherbored Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 xybert - my sincere apologies. i had no clue there was a 'jazz best 1000' series coming out of the EU. the phrase would make no sense outside of japan afaic because it's an attention to the pricepoint. anyhow, excuse my helplessness. as to clunky, all i can say is that maybe it's a west coast thing that doesn't translate? It's a swinging session so surely it's the singing that's "ghastly"? in any case, it sure gave a sorely needed chuckle. Quote
king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) What i'm trying to figure out is whether there's any audible difference between the Jazz Best Collection 1000 CDs manufactured in Japan, and the Jazz Best Collection 1000 CDs manufactured in the EU, which appear to be a facsimile of the Japanese ones in every other way. Not too sure if that is what is being discussed here or if it's previous non-Jazz Best Collection 1000 euro CDs (i.e. Atlantic Original Sound etc) that are being referred to as being inferior to japanese Jazz Best Collection 1000 CDs. Anyway, don't worry about it.No, I was actually asking the very same: Japanese v. euro facsimiles (not the older series which I just mentioned since I still don't consider replacing/re-buying).As for the Kenyatta ... it's pretty good indeed! Recorded 1966/67 with Mike Lawrence on trumpet (he can be heard on one of Joe Henderson's Milestone albums), Roswell Rudd, Walter Booker etc. I guess it falls somewhere in the Californian variant of the "Blue Note Avantgarde" that was recently discussed here (i.e. the Simmons/Lasha, Jimmy Woods, Tapscott stuff), but I'm not sure that's a labelling that makes much sense ... haven't played it in a while, will try to remember and drop a line here when I do.xybert - my sincere apologies. i had no clue there was a 'jazz best 1000' series coming out of the EU. the phrase would make no sense outside of japan afaic because it's an attention to the pricepoint. anyhow, excuse my helplessness. No one quite know what they are ... but they can be had for as little as 4 Euro a pop on amazon.it and they include, among many others, all of Charles Lloyd's Atlantic albums, the Chris Connors just discussed, several albums by John Lewis, the MJQ, Art Farmer, Jimmy Giuffre, Milt Jackson and many others. To get an idea:http://www.amazon.it/dp/B00DD0AGRG/http://www.amazon.it/dp/B00DS7Z3KE/http://www.amazon.it/dp/B00DD0AGMQ/Further ones displayed below ... there are several dozen of them around. king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 Is that the complete list? As a quick glance at it (I've seen it before, I guess it was mentioned early in this thread?) shows for instance much fewer Charles Lloyd albums (and none by Chris Connor?), the question probably is: where are the European remasters taken from? Copied from earlier Japanese reissues? It remains a mystery ... Quote

king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 but I guess that allows the assumption that the Euro ones are but a small choice of those (and that they might well be sonically identical then)? Quote
Head Man Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) I wonder... has anyone NOT found an Atlantic release that they wanted to get? BTW releases on the various Atlantic subsidiaries also seem to be generally available. I've picked up several on Elektra Jazz and Vortex. Edited September 13, 2014 by Head Man Quote
jazzbo Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 I have picked up Elektra and Vortex titles too. I'm very happy wtih this series, most I've picked up I consider considerable sonic improvements over the earlier cds. They sound very good in my usual players, there are a few that sound a bit harsh when played through my oldest player, but the newest players reproduce them very well. Quote
king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 I don't suppose there's a list around with all albums in words? It's a bit of a drag going through those sites and try and decipher all the covers (there's plenty of stuff unknown to me). Quote
king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 using google translate on some of these, I love "Rikorekushonzu Of The Big Band Era" Quote

etherbored Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 wow! a herculean effort - thank you very much! and fwiw, the euro series looks -identical- to its japanese counterpart. i'd wager that one side of the company was able to lift the fruits of labor from the other side of the company (they may not be organizationally related but they share common access to the same material) and debadge any traces of their work and sell it for, well, less. "WPCR-27967 Mark Whitfield / Patorisu" (i love it! this almost certainly shows a translating software was used) Quote
Head Man Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 I have picked up Elektra and Vortex titles too. I'm very happy wtih this series, most I've picked up I consider considerable sonic improvements over the earlier cds. They sound very good in my usual players, there are a few that sound a bit harsh when played through my oldest player, but the newest players reproduce them very well. Any recommendations? Thanks. The two Red Rodney/Ira Sullivan albums "Horizons" & "Spirit Within" originally on Elektra are both excellent as is the Chick Corea "Tones for Joan's Bones" originally on Vortex, which is the best sounding version I've heard (I think this has been discussed elsewhere on the board) Quote

king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 The list was there, next to the #2 additions ... I just copy pasted it - via google translate which accounts for some pretty funny titles here and there - and then spent ten minutes cleaning up the formatting (having the catalogue # at the beginning - guess google moved them around in a few dozen cases, not sure why). The list is huge ... and seing the first batches come from 2012 - are these all still available? I put this list together for stuff I want to look up (not that I want so many Herbie Mann albums, but a few more would be welcome):Nat Adderley - AutobiographyHerbie Mann - Right Now/Bossa NovaHerbie Mann - king ubu Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) Yeah, I thought they might be good. Same for those couple of Moodys! Also, it's kind of funny to see those albums that were out when I first started listening to jazz being canonized this way (speaking of Turner, Garrett, Chestnut, Carter ... I've got quite a few of those Garrett albums, but hardly any of the others, never really warmed to Garrett, but enjoy Turner quite some ... interesting that they don't include Joshua Redman who made his early ones for Warner as well - did he retain rights or transfer them to Nonesuch? But then Nonesuch is part of Warner, too, isn't it? Or did that change with all the mega M & A's of late?) Edited September 13, 2014 by king ubu Quote
xybert Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 xybert - my sincere apologies. i had no clue there was a 'jazz best 1000' series coming out of the EU. the phrase would make no sense outside of japan afaic because it's an attention to the pricepoint. anyhow, excuse my helplessness. as to clunky, all i can say is that maybe it's a west coast thing that doesn't translate? It's a swinging session so surely it's the singing that's "ghastly"? in any case, it sure gave a sorely needed chuckle. No need to apologise man hopefully i didn't come off like i was having a go at you. Just been insanely tired lately hence the brevity and reluctance to continue the discussion. Cheers. Quote
etherbored Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 no, not in the least. i was only embarrassed at my own ineptitude. i'd no idea that there was a euro series and blew right past its mention here. upon close examination of the amazon.it series artwork, especially the rear inlay, they simply *have* to be copy and pastes of the japanese issues. there's no way wea italy (or wea europe) would create their own precise and crystal clear replications of original artwork down to the placement of copyright boilerplate in the same exact location that the japanese have. is it foolish to consider going in for the lloyd titles at around 5 euro a pop when i can walk into disc union and purchase them over the counter for +/- $9.00 usd...? cheers!
