mikeweil Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 Didn't know this existed, sure would like to hear it ( )! Jimmy Giuffre, Lenny Popkin and Ian Underwood - what a reed section. I bet a list of all the Lennox students would read pretty wild. Maybe that's where Don Ellis met Dave MacKay, the first pianist of his big band in California and fellow member in the Hindustani Jazz Sextet. Quote
king ubu Posted January 28, 2004 Author Report Posted January 28, 2004 Check the link for more information, Mike! This of course is no official release (however sold as if it was - sometimes those CD stores don't seem to know what they sell!). And there were more titles performed. The CD includes only a third or half of the music from the 1959 concert. ubu Quote
brownie Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 This is the Royal Jazz CD which came out in 1990. One of the most interesting albums released by the French bootleggers who were issuing those unissued sides. They also released CDs with rare music from Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Kenny Dorham and others. Quote
JohnS Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 A lucky find Flurin, I heard the Ornette piece on the radio some years ago and wanted it ever since. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I have this CD also. Thanks for the additional info. on who's playing. The CD insert only has about a third of the players listed. Quote
brownie Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 An Atlantic test pressing of the Lenox music is up for auction on EBay. This comes for Fred Cohen's Jazz Record Center: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...6&category=1078 Quote
David Ayers Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 Interesting article - thanks for the link. The album is now on Spotify Quote
romualdo Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 thanks for the info/link Brownie Fascinating read - pity that 3CD set & DVD were never released Quote
king ubu Posted July 8, 2012 Author Report Posted July 8, 2012 Earlier discussion But, no, this was the earlier discussion for the other one Quote
paul secor Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) Earlier discussion But, no, this was the earlier discussion for the other one You're right. Have to start checking dates. But the later discussion does include the concert personnel info for the Royal Jazz cd. The info on the cd booklet is incomplete. Edited July 8, 2012 by paul secor Quote
romualdo Posted November 23, 2013 Report Posted November 23, 2013 bringing up the Lenox School of Jazz thread again can anyone verify what vinyl was originally released from the 59 date (Aug 29) - an Atlantic test pressing has been mentioned & for sale (see above - unfortunately the link to ebay no longer exists) The Lord discography also mentions a "special LP, not for sale" - I wonder if he is referring to the test pressing? Discogs also mentions a privately pressed LP & a repressed Italian facsimile (does this reuse the original LP cover) - if it was only a test pressing, I can't imagine a properly designed cover was made) http://www.discogs.com/Ornette-59-Lenox-School-Of-Jazz/release/4368556 Were all 11 titles (in circulation on the 2 CDs) released on this mysterious LP (LPs)? So, was there a private pressing with that amazing cover plus a test pressing for Atlantic Michael Fitzgerald's site does not discuss the LP/LPs (AFAIK) Quote

I think not,  I don't think so, though.... Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 13, 2024 Report Posted May 13, 2024 I bought the Royal Jazz bootleg CD reissue of this concert recently, so many of the musicians are unidentified. It is obviously dubbed from an LP as the audio clicks are audible. Quote
JSngry Posted May 13, 2024 Report Posted May 13, 2024 It was a school, or a clinic really. So Giuffre & Cherry could well have played together, even though not on the concert that was recorded. clifford_thornton Posted May 27, 2024 Report Posted May 27, 2024 I knew of the Italian bootleg LP but had never seen evidence of an Atlantic test pressing. That's pretty cool. Quote
