colinmce Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Anybody ever notice that when it comes to some artists, it's tough to find any titles on the cheap? I'm talking under $15-20. I noticed this is now the case with Eddie Costa. I just did searches on Amazon and EBay and found that titles that were affordable a few years ago like Guys & Dolls and the Lonehill trio set are up into the stratosphere. His Mode date is still a good buy but that's about it. Any other examples? And I know you can always find something here and there-- I'm talking on the whole here. Quote
colinmce Posted September 13, 2012 Author Report Posted September 13, 2012 You can add Freddie Roach: nothing on Amazon CD-wise under $50! Quote
JETman Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 As far as Costa goes, you're not looking hard enough: http://www.dustygroove.com/browse.php?kwfilter=eddie+costa&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&format=cd&new_status=new IMHO, these Costas are worth infinitely more than any Freddie Roach record. colinmce Posted September 13, 2012 Author Report Posted September 13, 2012 I'm not talking about bank-breaking here. But $25 is not the kind of money I drop casually on a CD. Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Buddy Bolden. All the plane tickets from NY to New Orleans to visit old plantations when someone claims to have found the Bolden cylinder in their attic has not been cheap; especially with nothing to show for the time and efforts. mjazzg Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Maybe try collecting the recordings rather than the musicians themselves? Quote
ejp626 Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Toshiko Akiyoshi Some/many sessions are quite easy to find. Some very difficult or at least expensive, like Monopoly Game and Four Seasons of Morita Village. Quite a few recordings never released outside of Japan. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Never noticed before how valuable my Freddie Roach collection had become Sam Lazar stuff is quite expensive, too. Charles Williams stuff is also very expensive including the wonderfully titled 'Charusuwiriamusu' for a Japanese issue of his first Mainstream album - a snip at £46-06 ($74-15). MG Quote
tranemonk Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I would concur on this one. It's a shame too since so many of her records are great... Very hard to get... Did you ge the two CD Let Freedom Swing set that came out a year or two ago? Toshiko Akiyoshi Some/many sessions are quite easy to find. colinmce Posted March 29, 2013 Author Report Posted March 29, 2013 I was inspired to grab a new Warne Marsh album, but a glance at Amazon reveals nothing affordable that I don't already have. Damn ... Quote
robertoart Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 Original vinyl pressings of BN Baby Face Willette. Grants First Stand Here Tis Face To Face and Stop And Listen will all cost a 'lot' of money. Especially if you get into a bidding war with a collector with 'deep pockets' Quote
erwbol Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Bobby Hutcherson's Total Eclipse. I've never paid as much for an eighties McMaster BN. It took me a while to find a copy without markings for close to €20. Prices for the McMaster and the recent TOCJ are more than double that on amazon. Edited March 29, 2013 by erwbol Quote

It surprise me that we don't have messages from Nigerian scam artists claiming to have three cylinders with the following titles: 'Authority stealing'; Dixieland version of classic Fela song: 'The Fat Man'; Dixieland version of classic New Orleans song: and 'Watermelon man'; original version of Herbie Hancock ripoff. clifford_thornton Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 There was a guy - UK I think - selling fake Genesis and Zep acetates on eBay and scamming people. The obvious tipoff was that they had standard Atlantic and Chrysalis labels with the word "Acetate" machine-printed on them... duh... Quote

Agreed on Riley and Wright. Also going to add Irene Schweizer. Those Intakts are absolutely locked in the mid-$20 range. I've never seen one of hers for much less. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Tina Brooks. I paid luckily $35 for a legit copy of Tony Williams "Tokyo Live". It seems the John Patton Mosaic Select goes for crazy prices these days. I paid around $25 each for all 4 "One Night with Blue Note" CD's. I got lucky in acquiring the Japanese only JOS releases for reasonable prices, $15 for a water damaged "Jimmy Smith Trio+LD". The Herbie Hancock trio CD's on Sony were pretty expensive to acquire, and it seems Mulgrew Miller is pretty expensive to collect these days. I do not collect anything on Steeplechase or CrissCross, all rather expensive. Quote
gmonahan Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Try getting hold of that #$%! Classics cd by Harlan Leonard and the Rockets some time. gregmo Quote
brownie Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 I regret not having purchased al those Miles Davis Mosaic vinyls when they came out. They reach skyhigh prices now! Quote

Just looked at Amazon UK for prices of John Patton stuff. Amazed to see someone's asking £273.94 (£273.94? WTF) for a vinyl of 'Memphis to New York spirit'. (Who would want the vinyl when the CD has three otherwise unreleased tracks from another session with Cabell?) Is this price a joke? Also, £51.90 for Eagle eye blues already. Is that out of print? SOmeone should tell George there's still money to be made out of this album. MG Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) Try getting hold of that #$%! Classics cd by Harlan Leonard and the Rockets some time. gregmo In hindsight, I bought far too few from that "Classics" series but it seems I acted smart in buying THAT one back then ... (though I already had the 60s LP from the "Vintage" series and later obtained Vol. 2 on Harlan Lonard from the French Black & White RCA lp series). Edited March 30, 2013 by Big Beat Steve Quote
