ghost of miles Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 I thought we had a thread devoted to this at one time, but an initial search did not turn it up, so... anything on the horizon that you're excited about, Mosaic or non-Mosaic? Or just anything in general? Quote
kh1958 Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 The impending new Mosaic Mingus set is the most exciting for me. And the continuation of the Black Saint/Soul Note box set series is also of significant interest. Quote
gmonahan Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 I hope Popmarket comes through with the (promised?) Brubeck Live Box. gregmo Quote
jazzbo Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) I'm excited about both those, and also next year's Miles Davis Bootleg Vol. 2. I'm also interested in the rumored box set of Miles Davis mono lp releases. I'm back into vinyl and would love to hear these. Edited September 12, 2012 by jazzbo Quote

Dave James Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I think the last Mosaic I bought was maybe a couple of years ago. That's not to say I haven't had the urge, but not enough of one to go looking for my credit card. That may change with the release of the Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald box. IMO, there can't be too much Chick Webb in the world. That guy swung so hard it was borderline dangerous. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I agree that the Webb set will be great. I have all this material though. . . . I will probably not get this one right away. . .I will probably get it eventually. Quote
lipi Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 This one's around the corner... Will that have anything that those two volumes on GHB didn't? I thought those were complete. Quote

jazztrain Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Chris, Can you shed any light on how this compares to the volumes that were issued on cd many years ago by the Italian King Jazz label? This one's around the corner... Quote
Christiern Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 This one's around the corner... Will that have anything that those two volumes on GHB didn't? I thought those were complete. I am not familiar with the GHB set. This one includes all the alternate takes (no false starts or incomplete takes, of course) and a mystery track on which an unidentified harmonica player renders "Caravan" with bass and drum accompaniment. It was among the King Jazz masters, so they decided to include it as the last track. This set also contains the spoken intros Mezz recorded for Storyville. Quote
jazztrain Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Chris, Leaving aside the mystery harmonica track, how many tracks are on the box? I'm still unclear if there's anything else new relative to the King Jazz CDs. Ironically, I just finished reading "Really the Blues" while away on vacation. Quote
gmonahan Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 This one's around the corner... I only have one cd of the old series, so I'm excited about this! 'Course, getting hold of Storyville boxes can sometimes be a bit of a pain. Any notion on a release date? gregmo Quote
romualdo Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) Chris, Leaving aside the mystery harmonica track, how many tracks are on the box? I'm still unclear if there's anything else new relative to the King Jazz CDs. Ironically, I just finished reading "Really the Blues" while away on vacation. Probably be a replica of the GHB sets 2CD (Vol. 1) & 3CD (Vol. 2) Edited September 13, 2012 by romualdo Quote
jazztrain Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Thanks Romualdo. Some searching on line turns up some earlier threads about this material, including one from 2006 where Chris mentions that Storyville was remastering the material. It appears that some or all of the material has been out before on cd and LP. I remembering having some of it on LPs from the King Jazz label from Italy. I think Alessandro Protti was the label owner. This was probably the source of a cd issue on what I think was four CDs. Those CDs may not have included the piano solo sides by Sammy Price, but I won't be able to confirm that until I return home in a couple of days. It also looks like the material was out on GHB, as you note, and on a series of five earlier Mezzrow/Bechet and Bechet CDs on Storyville. Therefore, the new issue in Storyville may be largely a repackaging of earlier Storyville CDs (except they now include the mysterious harmonica track and all the alternates (are they on the earlier Storyville CDs?) and notes by Chris. It sounds like the new box is worth getting, but I'd really like to sort this all out before making the plunge! Quote

John L Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I have the former King Jazz release of this music. If you like Bechet and the blues, pick it up! It is pretty much a collection of nothing-but-the-blues sessions, and Bechet gives some of his very best blues playing here. I keep coming back to this set. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I've got the King Jazz cds and the GBH. I think I'll just stick with those. Quote
T.D. Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I thought we had a thread devoted to this at one time, but an initial search did not turn it up, so... anything on the horizon that you're excited about, Mosaic or non-Mosaic? Or just anything in general? Not an original thought, and previously mentioned above, but I'm very eagerly awaiting the October round of Black Saint / Soul Note boxes (Abrams, Lewis, Adams, Douglas). GA Russell Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 If the Douglas box is priced like the current sets are, I'll plan to get it for Christmas. Maybe the Adams too. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 (edited) Hip O Select / Verve Select is releasing Volume 2 of the Clifford Brown Master Takes on Oct 22nd. No description on amazon as yet but here is the link anyway: http://www.amazon.com/Emarcy-Master-Takes-Clifford-Brown/dp/B0094GW93W/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1347551620&sr=1-1&keywords=clifford+brown This has got to be the solo stuff. The Brown/Roach stuff was on the 4 cd first volume. In true intelligent record company fashion, this is nowhere to be found on the Hip-o website! Vol.2 contains the master takes of the recordings with Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Helen Merrill: AMG. Edited September 15, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
