Head Man Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) Does anyone know whether this has ever had a CD release? Edited September 4, 2012 by Head Man Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Yes, it was released on CD in Japan on Norma NOCD5639 in 1996. I have it, but I have no idea if it's still available. Quote
JETman Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 I have this one which was released from Europe (I believe) in 1995: http://www.amazon.com/Music-From-The-Connection/dp/B000QZXFE2/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1346791395&sr=1-1&keywords=howard+mcghee+the+connection Quote

paul secor Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) Boplicity issued it on CD - Boplicity 019. http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Leaders/ReddFreddie-ldr.php Scroll down to June 13, 1960. Edited September 4, 2012 by paul secor Quote
JETman Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 So? I was just trying to point out that there was a cd release of the title other than the Japanese issue you cited. Quote

The original poster asked specifically about a CD release and you posted an MP3 link. You could at least have made that clear. Quote
Head Man Posted September 4, 2012 Author Report Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) Thanks, guys. I've managed to track this down: Dusty Blue & The Connection It's released on the Solar label which I think is one of those Andorran companies. Has anyone heard it and can comment on what the sound is like? Edited September 4, 2012 by Head Man Quote
jazzbo Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 I haven't heard it, but I bet it's a clone of the Boplicity or the Japanese cd, and probably the Japanese Bethlehem cd of Dusty Blue. Quote

AFAIK, there were no MP3's in 1995, were there? Quote

I have better things to do than wasting my time on your posts. Goodbye. Edited September 4, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote

This is the CD link. I bought a copy of this US CD in the mid 2000's - I ordered it directly from a small company in NY I think Not at home at present so can't give more details. I'm sure it was a legit pressing Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Everybody heard this one? I had that record back in my LP days, but I don't remember if it was any good. Quote
sonnymax Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) I had that record back in my LP days, but I don't remember if it was any good. I like the Payne/Drew score, although not as much as the one penned by Freddie Redd. Considering the fact that Payne has Clark Terry, Bennie Green, Duke Jordan, Ron Carter and Charlie Persip on hand, how can you go wrong? Edited September 5, 2012 by sonnymax Quote

I have it as part of the Charlie Parker Records box. Probably not a legit reissue, but who knows. Quote

I have that Boplicity CD Sound is fine although I prefer the sound from the original Felsted France vinyl! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Everybody heard this one? I had that record back in my LP days, but I don't remember if it was any good. I've got the LP on the UK 'Charlie Parker Records' label. Budget label Egmont - I think it was - who issued it (located 'Up North' back in the day). Quote

I have it too, on Egmont (£0.50p at the local corner shop). Interesting line up with Clark Terry and Bennie Green, Charlie Persip and Ron Carter. Pleasant enough but probably not worth getting too excited about. Quote
bertrand Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Very confused at this point. Bertrand. Quote
Shawn Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Very confused at this point. Bertrand. Not that complicated, 3 different albums. The two Freddie Redd's are the original score with different lineups, the Cecil Payne is a completely different score written for the same play, I believe when it went on tour after Redd's involvement ceased. I like the Boplicity Redd with Tina Brooks the best. The Cecil Payne/Kenny Drew is great and I would rank that second, the Blue Note Redd would be third. Haven't listened to any of them in quite awhile so I'm just going from memory. I did a vinyl transfer of the Cecil Payne date which came out sounding very nice. Quote
paul secor Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Wish that someone had recorded and issued Cecil Taylor's music from The Connection. Though possibly some of the Candid material relates to that. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 I like them all. . . I'd probably rank them: BN, then the one on Felsted, then the Cecil Payne. Quote
king ubu Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Is the Felsted one actually a McGhee album with Redd compositions/arrangements or a Redd album with McGhee featured? Not that it really matters, but I've often wondered and not found it in my iGarbage-can because I looked under the wrong leader. Quote
