RDK Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Is 691 supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? It seems like an incredibly big number to me for a jazz board (even if you take away the bots, etc.) and it was only a few months ago, so doesn't that contradict your "dead board walking" meme? Or are you suggesting some massive diaspora has taken place here since June? Quote
Daniel A Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 A message to poster Blue Train: Whatever points you may have are lost because of how your posts in this thread are percieved. This is how they look to me, a relative outsider on this forum nowadays: You're deeply offended by the moderator's response to your complaints and you're now trying to drum up support, rather than keeping the whole thing in PM:s where it probably belongs. However, as the moderator - as well as his moderating - is generally regarded as quite reasonable by the forum members you're getting little sympathy, and you're now retorting to sarcastic manners to try to make everyone feeling bad. This is not doing you, or anyone else, any good. It is a fact that there have been few new members that stick around in later years. As for myself, I don't post much because work and family is taking most of my disposable time. Maybe the fact that there is less discussion about music over here is a factor too. Fewer members are responsible for the majority of posts than 5-10 years ago and because of that a bit of the variety is lost. To use the ever-popular bar analogy, it's a bar where one third of the guests is still consuming the same number of drinks. But what can you do? I don't think that you could tell people on what subjects they should post. I think the reception new members are getting is civil enough. But it may definitely be that the in-jokes and so on is just a little off-putting for new members. Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 My take? You've let an internet forum get under your skin. Might be time to shut it down for a a little while. Try to find something else to fill the time that you normally would log on to the internet. I'm not being condescending, so please don't take this the wrong way. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Can we get back to the original topic here? I'm curious about the bootleg thing. If y'all want to discuss them and honestly think I'm being too cautious about potential litigation, then hey, that's cool. Although I still think blogs that post copyrighted material should be off limits. Concerning duplicate threads, I think the concept of how much time passes is a decent one. As someone mentioned, having multiple "RIP" threads on the same day / week is annoying. But if it's been a few months or a year or more, then it's probably not a big deal. Regarding Dan, he's still here because he's a personal friend. That's the honest truth. I've appealed to him via PMs before to calm down and he's always been respectful of that. Has he done things that would get other people banned? Yep. Is that fair? Nope. But he's a friend of mine and I own the board and there it is. Just being honest. No one can ban anyone except me. Or maybe Rolf (can't recall). If you have an issue with a moderation decision, bring it up with me or the other moderators. I honestly don't understand why you ("Blue Train") are here if this place is so unfair and lame. Look, the rules are in place as a general guideline. They are oftentimes stretched and yes, some people are treated differently than others. Welcome to the real world! If you expect everything to be completely equal and fair all the time, you're in for a lifetime's worth of disappointment, especially outside the internet. The moderators aren't perfect, I'm not perfect, neither are you or anyone else. We do the best we can and sometimes personal issues outweigh others. But I'm always open to suggestions and I try to treat people with respect. And yes, new registrations are still closed. Still trying to figure out how these spambots are getting through.Oh and one more thing: If you've never heard an original multi-track tape of an RVG session, then you have no clue about the effect of mastering. I had the pleasure, thanks to Mr. Nessa, of hearing just such a thing and it was mind-blowing. So yes, mastering (and mixing) is immensely important and worthy of endless discussion. Quote
fasstrack Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 Reading the end of this almost makes me wish I was a shrink-Freudian! of course (; There seems, for one thing, to be no end to people's infantile need for attention (and by no means do I think I'm different or excused), and it's equally fascinating how easily riled and thrown many of us get. One thing that's obvious to me is that the need for attention re trolls or even engaging someone online who rubs you the wrong way esp. when an ignore button is so easy to use runs both ways. If you keep engaging and engaging and getting riled it says as much about you as the troll. There are some smart, accomplished people here. One by-product of this is strong opinions and personalities. Head-butts are inevitable sometimes. The moral/courteousness compass I try every day, desperately at times, to believe we all have should signal when it becomes a boring, distracting, or self-absorbed sideshow unfair to the OP and all others trying to have THAT discussion. Still working on it myself, and I fail a lot.Ignore works. Quote
