RiRiIII Posted September 3, 2012 Author Report Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) United Archives, that had issued the first volume of live Miles Davis some years ago, makes available the 2nd volume (2 discs) for 12 Euro. I correct myself. The set I posted above is actually the 3rd volume covering 1958-60! Alex Edited September 3, 2012 by Larry Kart Quote
brownie Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Another interesting set from United Archives. It includes a couple of broadcasts I have not heard (the August 1959 items from Chicago and Birdland). The €12,20 list price from Amazon.fr is a no-brainer... Quote

bertrand Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) I posted my general views on this on the other thread, but let's apply my thoughts to this particular case: how does one know that the release being discussed is unauthorized? I strongly suspect it is, but how would I know for sure? What if the person behind this label was a truly dedicated person who did years and years of leg work dealing with the Miles estate, got all the t's crossed and i's dotted, and then finds out that everyone thinks he's a bootlegger? Of course, the bootleggers are to blame for creating this paradigm that every release from an unknown label is a boot unless proven othewise, but it's really a sad situation. I know there are telltale signs like 'made in Spain' and such, but still, how does one really know? Bertrand. Edit: changed 'maid in Spain' to 'made in Spain'. I must have had the 'Maids of Cadiz' on my brain. Edited September 3, 2012 by bertrand Quote
king ubu Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Maids of Spain are fine with me ... the first box had plenty of omissions, but it's nevertheless a nice way to have lots of this music grouped in one place. Will look for this one, too! Just to be clear: first, second box ... and then the expanded version comprising both on 13 discs? The new should contain these (info compiled from Losin): Café Bohemia, New York NY Mutual Network radio broadcasts (B) May 3, 1958 (4 items; TT = 11:11) Miles Davis (tpt); John Coltrane (ts); William "Red" Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d); Guy Wallace (ann) 1 Band warming up 0:04 2 Woody 'n' You (D. Paris - March 21 - (semi?) officially released on RTE/Trema Stockholm - March 22 - officially released on Dragon Copenhagen - March 24 - plentily booted Düsseldorf - March 28 - TV filming studio gig without Miles, (semi?) officially on WDR Jazzline (under Coltrane's name) Frankfurt - March 30 - booted Munich - April 3 - booted Zürich - April 8 - booted (I think) by Storyville Scheveningen - April 9 - booted aplenty (one track officially in the big useless KoB box) Then, still 1960, the fall tour with Sonny Stitt: Manchester - September 27 Paris - October 11 Stockholm - October 13 Paris and Stockholm are also out on Trema and Dragon, respectively, Manchester has been released by the Spanish. Not sure what this new box will contain, it would be huge if it were complete. And as all these boots, it will be marred by wrong speed/pitch issues abound, I'm afraid. Quote
JETman Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 1960 in thread title is an error. Cover says 1958-59. Quote
king ubu Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 1960 in thread title is an error. Cover says 1958-59. Then what does it include that makes it extend to more than two discs?Uhm, I just see the cover - it IS just two discs... http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/images/B008C1IBYG/ref=dp_otherviews_z_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&img=1 (w/zoom on the back cover)But where's the May 3, 1958 date? Has that been officially released (which still wouldn't stop these fellows to include it, I think).Do they miss that one because (amazingly, at least as far as Losin goes) it hasn't been bootlegged yet? Quote
JETman Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Including 1960 would make it like a 16 cd set. They're probably planning a set which only covers that year somewhere down the road. And yes, Box 1 = 10 discs, Box 2 = 4 discs. They combined the two to come up with the 13 disc set, probably by being able to use the empty space on the discs more efficiently. Quote
king ubu Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) Thanks! A 1960 set makes little sense to me, but then what do I know ... they'd have to learn and include stuff that's so far been beyond the scope of bootleggers. The omission of the earliest 1958 date still seems odd, as there'd be more than enough space on disc one! (edited for crappy typing) Edited September 4, 2012 by king ubu Quote
Moko Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 I was wondering what the sound quality is like on these CD's, is it up to the official Columbia stuff like Carnegie Hall, Miles In Berlin etc? I guess different dates will vary but in general is this something a fairly interested fan would like, or is it a listen to it once only for completists job? Quote
jazzbo Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 They're sourced (my best guess) from other bootleg cds, and as such the sound varies. They don't sound as good as the commercial, official recordings imo. But they're not HORRIBLE. I've listened to these many times over the years. Admittedly I may be less fussy than some. . . . Quote
mjzee Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 eMusic just listed two releases on the Lantower label (yeah, I know...), of Miles at the Olympia 1960: volume 1 is March 21, volume 2 is October 11. Sound quality is good on both. Quote
romualdo Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Just cross-checked the tracks with what I have It's all on the 2 Miles RLR CDs (SQ not too bad) 1. Radio Broadcasts 58-59 2. Unissued At Birdland 52-59 plus the Herridge live CBS Studio recordings are on the DVD (film footage) that came with the 50th anniversary KOB release So What from this session is also on the Lonehill CD "MD Live In Den Haag" Quote
Clunky Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 I was trying to weed out some duplicates from my collection. I thought that my LP copy of "Miles Davis All Stars feat. John Coltrane with Cannonball Adderley (Jazz Band) was totally redundant with this 2CD set. The LP gives the wrong dates and an incorrect title. More note worthy is that the pitch of the Jan. 3rd 1959 date is slightly higher on the Jazz Band LP. Anyone know if this is correct or the united archives CDs? It's hard to make judgements re sound quality of the transfers given the different pitches. Quote
