robertoart
Every photo of Coles I've ever seen shows the skin discoloration. He must have had a severe case of Vitiligo, as Michael Jackson did. Early photos of Grant have a mustache which he got rid of later. It makes him look a little different. Bertrand. Appropriate that they are releasing this in Movember then.

ghost of miles
Via Steven Cerra's blog, this from Noal Cohen: I just wanted to alert you the the fact that there will soon be released an Uptown Records double CD of bassist Chubby Jackson. This will include Boris Rose recordings of Chubby's band (including Frankie Socolow, Al Porcino, Gene DiNovi, Tiny Kahn, Marty Flax, Rob Swope, Teddy Charles) live at the Royal Roost on March 5 and 12, 1949. This was an exciting bebop band that was only around for a very short time. Edited March 3, 2014 by ghost of miles

So which is now out next? This Chubby Jackson CD or the Howard McGhee CD discussed elsewhere in this forum? ghost of miles
The McGhee is already listed on Amazon for May 20. The Chubby Jackson isn't showing up there yet; I'm guessing from Noal's note that we'll be seeing it sometime later this year. Peter Friedman
This new CD reminds of back in roughly 1955. Â I was in New York City and attended a concert at Town Hall by the Oscar Pettiford Big Band. This CD will not include that concert, but it brings back fond memories. king ubu
The newly appeared 2-CD Uptown set OSCAR PETTIFORD -NEW YORK 1955-1958 (UPCD 27.86/87) presents the inimitable leader in Birdland and Op's Black Pearl broadcasts featuring an array of stars, including Donald Byrd, Johnny Coles, Art Farmer, J. R. Monterose, Gigi Gryce, and Hank Jones. The groups go from sextets to nonets and big band performances, and with the sole exception of one of the Birdland shows (which only appeared on a long unavailable Spotlite LP), are all previously unissued, not even being (yet) listed on the Tom Lord Discography! The broadcasts are all in good sound quality and showcase rarely heard formations by such a brilliant artist as Pettiford, whose groups unfortunately were not as frequently recorded as they should have been (Pettiford unexpectedly died in Copenhagen in 1960 from a virus closely related to polio at the age of 37). This amazing set, showcasing more than one hour and a half of music, makes then a worthy addition to his catalog.COLLECTIVE PERSONNEL: DONALD BYRD, JOHNNY COLES, RAY COPELAND, ART FARMER, JOE WILDER, trumpet EDDIE BERT, JIMMY CLEVELAND, trombone DAVID AMRAM, JIM BUFFINGTON, ED LONDON, flugelhorn GIGI GRYCE, GENE QUILL, alto sax J.R.
