JSngry Posted August 29, 2012 Report Posted August 29, 2012 Van Cliburn's mom was, for a while in the late 1950s, organist at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Kilgore, Tx, where my family attended worship services for many years. My folks used to tell me that young Van would sit in the pew with me when my folks left to take communion. True story, and I hope that it in no way contributed to his current illness, for which I wish him the best possible outcome. My dad died from bone cancer too, after living with it for almost fifteen years. The first ten were ok, the last four kinda rough, and the last one hell. Quote
fasstrack Posted August 30, 2012 Report Posted August 30, 2012 The thing that always stuck in my head about Van Cliburn, for some reason, is that apparently he lived w/his mother until she died. And an LP my dad had, 'Plays Chopin'-which I was sure was pronounced 'Chop-in (soft i). I don't know his playing. The only 'name' classical pianist I listened to very long was Rubinstein-my shortcoming. But I was paying more attention to the composer back then. I certainly wish him well. Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 30, 2012 Report Posted August 30, 2012 At his best, Cliburn was a great pianist, fantastic chops plus deep musicality in the repertoire that attracted him. Took me a while to reach that conclusion, given my reaction to all the early hype, but the recordings don't lie. Quote
