He was especially instrumental in bringing European & American improvisers together. 8th of July 1968 is an amazing document. I also have an unissued concert from '68 with Pharoah plus McLaughlin & Sharrock on guitars. Not great audio, but wild stuff. I saw him a bunch of times in NY in the '70s & '80s. Happy birthday, Gunter.

Ooh, I haven't heard the '68 concert w/ Sharrock & McLaughlin. There's one I'm looking for with McLaughlin and Han Bennink, too, but I don't think it's the same material.

8th of July is a classic, and I'm also very fond of the Wergo and ESP LPs. Hampel's a fascinating character.
