Pete C Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 He was especially instrumental in bringing European & American improvisers together. 8th of July 1968 is an amazing document. I also have an unissued concert from '68 with Pharoah plus McLaughlin & Sharrock on guitars. Not great audio, but wild stuff. I saw him a bunch of times in NY in the '70s & '80s. Happy birthday, Gunter. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 Ooh, I haven't heard the '68 concert w/ Sharrock & McLaughlin. There's one I'm looking for with McLaughlin and Han Bennink, too, but I don't think it's the same material.8th of July is a classic, and I'm also very fond of the Wergo and ESP LPs. Hampel's a fascinating character. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 8th of July is the only one I know. It was my first free jazz album. I think I have it in a box somewhere. Flying Dutchman label, right? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 FD reissued the Birth/Natural Jazz private issue, which was and is Hampel's label. Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 I reviewed "8th of July" for Down Beat way back when. A nice memory. Quote
