StarThrower Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 I have the following albums: The Individualism Of Out Of The Cool Complete Pacific Jazz Svengali Miles Ahead Porgy And Bess Sketches Of Spain Am I missing out on any other wonderful Gil Evans arrangements? I also have the Hendrix album but it's not high on my list. And I love the duo album Paris Blues. Quote
Free For All Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Here are a couple more I really like. Quote
brownie Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 FFA beat me to the 'Gil Evans & 10' album. A must have one! Also recommended: Quote
medjuck Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) Quote
brownie Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) Time to get new eyeglasses Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Can't say enough good things about this one. Probably hard to find on CD these days, but there was a pricy Japanese issue (EmArcy UCCJ-4047) a few years ago with several really great bonus tracks (and not just alternates, there's a fantastic version of Billy Harper's "Cry of Hunger" that's only in the bonus material). A few Youtube clips below, enjoy! Quote
JSngry Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Worth tracking down. In both CD & LP versions, as they are substantially different experiences. Also, the two duet albums w/Konitz, Heroes & Anti-Heroes. Also very worthwhile is the new ArtistShare release of "recently discovered" previously unrecorded Gil arrangements. The detail of the recording, and therefore the ability to hear the details of the arrangements, is about as anything you'll ever hear. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 And for a different view: Arranged By, Piano [Electric, Acoustic] – Gil Evans; Bass [Electric] – Mo Foster; Guitar [Electric] – Ray Russell; Keyboards – John Taylor (2); Saxophone [Alto, Soprano], Flute – Chris Hunter, Stan Sulzmann; Saxophone [baritone, Soprano], Clarinet [bass], Synthesizer – John Surman; Saxophone [Tenor, Soprano] – Don Weller; Trombone – Malcolm Griffiths, Rick Taylor (5); Trumpet – Guy Barker, Henry Lowther, Miles Evans The version of Little Wing is wonderful. Quote
JSngry Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Both albums w/Helen Merill, the old one and the later one. I like the later one better because everybody's older and the tempos are slower, but not forcibly so, just naturally so. Quote
StarThrower Posted August 13, 2012 Author Report Posted August 13, 2012 Quite a few albums here I wasn't aware of. I ordered a copy of Blues In Orbit. Some of these others are not available, or quite expensive. Quote
Guy Berger Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) I thought this one was relatively dull (though it has its moments). Definitely not on the level of Out of the Cool or Individualism. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) I thought this one was relatively dull (though it has its moments). Definitely not on the level of Out of the Cool or Individualism. Your "dull" is my "subtle". Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 (edited) Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) I thought this one was relatively dull (though it has its moments). Definitely not on the level of Out of the Cool or Individualism. Gil Evans & Ten is one of my favourite Gil Evans albums, along with Out of the Cool and the two Pacific Jazz albums, New Bottle, Old Wine and Great Jazz Standards. Edited August 13, 2012 by J.A.W. colinmce Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 Also consider getting the Miles/Gil box set. Loads of extra material. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 I have a CD copy of Where Flamingos Fly available as a part of the posted estate sale I'm handling, if I don't decide to buy it myself. Quote
phunkey Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 Also consider getting the Miles/Gil box set. Loads of extra material. Absolutely essential imo! The box includes some intriguing, previously unreleased material with the Miles quintet, most notably the Falling Water suite. The box set is outrageously cheap as well. Another essential Gil Evans record is much more oblique...the Claude Thornhill Orchestra's "The Real Birth Of The Cool", which features some of Gil's earliest and yet finest arranging. Quote
StarThrower Posted August 16, 2012 Author Report Posted August 16, 2012 The Miles/Gil Evans box is available from Grooves-Inc. for only 19 dollars. I bought the 60s Quintet box for the same price. http://www.grooves-inc.com/davis-miles-the-complete-columbia-studio-recordings-col-cd-album-pZZ Quote
MartyJazz Posted August 16, 2012 Report Posted August 16, 2012 (edited) This is an unusual CD I picked up a few years ago. Features Sting with the Gil Evans Orchestra at the Perugia JF in '87: Edited August 16, 2012 by MartyJazz Quote
RiRiIII Posted August 16, 2012 Report Posted August 16, 2012 (edited) Great recommendations. StarThrower Posted August 17, 2012 Author Report Posted August 17, 2012 51 pounds is an awful lot to pay for Blues In Orbit, Alexandros. Much cheaper here. http://www.grooves-inc.com/product_info.php/products_id/859484837 Quote
sidewinder Posted August 17, 2012 Report Posted August 17, 2012 (edited) Arranged By, Piano [Electric, Acoustic] – Gil Evans; Bass [Electric] – Mo Foster; Guitar [Electric] – Ray Russell; Keyboards – John Taylor (2); Saxophone [Alto, Soprano], Flute – Chris Hunter, Stan Sulzmann; Saxophone [baritone, Soprano], Clarinet [bass], Synthesizer – John Surman; Saxophone [Tenor, Soprano] – Don Weller; Trombone – Malcolm Griffiths, Rick Taylor (5); Trumpet – Guy Barker, Henry Lowther, Miles Evans The version of Little Wing is wonderful. That was the 'core' of the Evans band I saw at Ronnie Scotts. Certainly Barker, Weller, Ray Russell and Chris Hunter were there. Frank Ricotti was added on vibes and Ian Carr included in the trumpet section, I think. Remember the 'Lttle Wing'. Gil played quite a bit on Fender-Rhodes. Edited August 17, 2012 by sidewinder Quote
JSngry Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 Gil Evans plus 10. (I think that's what it's called.) Had not seen this cover until tonight. This is the original? Quote
brownie Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 The original is the one - on Prestige - with the beautiful headshot (by Esmond Edwards). The NewJazz 'Big Stuff' was a later reissue. Quote
