GA Russell Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 I'm in the mood to see a James Bond picture. I haven't seen one since the first Pierce Brosnan film called Goldeneye, which I thought was pretty stupid. I loved the previous two with Timothy Dalton, The Living Daylights and License to Kill. Which post-Goldeneye do you recommend that I pick up? By the way, is there a consensus regarding Tomorrow Never Dies? Quote
kinuta Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Casino Royale without a doubt. A strong contender for the best Bond film ever. Quote
sonnymax Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 The last two Bond films starring Daniel Craig are great, imo. Forget Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and any notions of 007 as a witty, elegant gentleman (a lethal Noel Coward?). Bond is a spy: an intelligent, resourceful, rugged individual. I never thought I'd be interested in (much less entertained by) a Bond movie again, but Casino Royale and Quantum Solace are smart, action-filled suspense films that are well worth seeing. Quote
Shawn Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 (edited) Casino Royale without a doubt. A strong contender for the best Bond film ever. Agreed. A spectacular film. I wasn't as impressed with Quantum (primarily because of the Bourne-inspired hyper editing) but I'm REALLY looking forward to Skyfall which is coming out soon. Of the Brosnan films my favorite is Goldeneye which I think is alot of fun and not dissimilar to the better Roger Moore vehicles, but I think they kind of went downhill from there. Interesting to note is that Martin Campbell directed both Goldeneye and Casino Royale. As mentioned above, Skyfall has me very excited because I can't wait to see what Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) brings to the Bond table, he is such an interesting choice! tranemonk Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Totally agree... that movie got me hooked on Eva Green. (Seriously hot....) Casino Royale without a doubt. A strong contender for the best Bond film ever. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 I actually prefer Quantum of Solace to Casino Royale, Eva Greene didn't do as much for me as she seems to do for others, but Olga Kulyenko, wow. These latest two Bond films are the only ones I've ever really liked, most like the novels. Quote
king ubu Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 At least we won't get in a terrible row then, Lon! (just only realized her mother was in Godard's great "Masculin - féminin"!)And I'm much on the "Casino Royale" side, as opposed to "Quantum of solace" - much better story, better paced, less flashy effects, and just generally more meat to the bone, it seemed to me. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 I can agree that there's more meat to the bone, but the whole casino setting etc. doesn't appeal to me as much as it seems to others. I liked the grittiness of Solace. Anyway, those are the two films to check out GA! Quote
tranemonk Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 In addition.. my issue with Quantam of Solace was that the bad guy wasn't very bad (IMHO). I am looking forward to Skyfall with Javier Bardem as the bad guy.... Quote
Soulstation1 Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Never was a James Bond movie fan for some reason Quote

Dominic Greene: You should know something about me and the people I work with. We deal with the left and the right, dictators or liberators. If the current president had been more agreeable, I wouldn't be talking to you. So if you decide not to sign, you'll wake up with your balls in your mouth and your willing replacement standing over you. If you doubt that, then shoot me, take that money and have a good night's sleep. Yeah, a real sweet guy. Quote
gmonahan Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Count me with those who like "Casino Royale" better than "Quantum." I thought the latter took itself too seriously. I like at least a little bit of wit and humor with my Bond. The Moore films took it to extremes, unhappily. I too am really looking forward to "Skyfall." gregmo Quote
BruceH Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Like just about everybody else, I really liked "Casino Royale" (2006)----for once, a reboot that WORKED. "Solace" was a big comedown for me, mainly due to a weak script. Is the Bond series ever going to be able to muster two good movies in row? Quote
GA Russell Posted August 13, 2012 Author Report Posted August 13, 2012 OK! Thanks for your input, guys! I've ordered Casino Royale for $2.17. http://www.amazon.com/Casino-Royale-Two-Disc-Widescreen-Daniel/dp/B000MNP2KI/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1344881623&sr=1-1&keywords=casino+royale+dvd Quote

Pete C Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 "Casino Royale" (2006)----for once, a reboot that WORKED. Well, the first film version can only be considered an anomaly, to say the least. The film has had a mixed reception among critics, some of whom regard it as a baffling, disorganised affair, with critic Roger Ebert branding it "possibly the most indulgent film ever made". On the other hand, Andrea LeVasseur called it "a psychedelic, absurd masterpiece"[2] and cinema historian Robert von Dassanowsky has described it as "a film of momentary vision, collaboration, adaption, pastiche, and accident. It is the anti-auteur work of all time, a film shaped by the very zeitgeist it took on."[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_%281967_film%29 Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 I'm pretty sure he meant a reboot of the series rather than the remake of Casino Royale. Quote
