undergroundagent Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I've never heard his Grant Green album, so I'm interested to hear what you people think of this session? Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Its excellent and highly recommended. Most of Grant's work on BN was with organs or Sonny Clark, so its nice to hear someone different (the undervalued Kenny Drew). Especially nice versions of "Exodus" and "So What". Quote
Dave James Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 This is my favorite Grant Green session...period. Up over and out. Quote
Brad Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I guess it depends how much you love Grant. But if you do (and I do), this is a must pickup, as is all of his BN output (at least before the late 60s). Ben Dixon on drum, Ben Tucker on bass, how could you go wrong? Quote
John B Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 This is a really strong and , imo, unjustly overlooked at times, disc. I really dig this one. Quote
vibes Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I find this CD a bit underwhelming. For me, nothing too exciting happens. It's an OK session, but I can think of at least 10 other Grant Green sessions I'd rather listen to. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 By far not one of the best Grant Greens, but still worth owning, in my opinion. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I think this is a great session. Maybe not quite "top-5" great, but a very solid date, to my ears. The Conn has an extra tune not found on the TOCJ, so go for the Conn if you have a choice (in my opinion). Quote
marcoliv Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 when i finally got this one on the Conn series i was very excited to hear So What. it did nothing for me and maybe that's why i'm not an enthousiastic about it. get it no matter what Marcus Oliveira Quote
Morganized Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I think this is a great session. Maybe not quite "top-5" great, but a very solid date, to my ears. The Conn has an extra tune not found on the TOCJ, so go for the Conn if you have a choice (in my opinion). I agree with Rooster on this one. Not in my Grant Green top five, but still a very good session and as someone has already said, it is nice to hear him in another setting. Quote
king ubu Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 love it love it love it love it!! I'm one of those who considers it an underrated and unjustly forgotten album. I sort of took it for granted, too when I got it, but it gets better everytime I listen! ubu Quote
BruceH Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Without a doubt, one of the truly great Velvet Underground songs.... Oh. Never mind. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I've never heard Sunday Mornin', but I would like to see a Grant Green top-five list from those that have mentioned the notion. Quote
Morganized Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I've never heard Sunday Mornin', but I would like to see a Grant Green top-five list from those that have mentioned the notion. impossible, Plenty of room for disagreement on this one but my personal favorites would probably go like this: Quartets with Sonny Clark Idle Moments Solid Matador Green Street There are more and on any given day one could easily find itself substituted for one of those above. I like a number of his sessions but when pressed I would have to go with those listed above, not in any order. B) Quote
Nate Dorward Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 As long as you replace one of those with one of the sessions with Larry Young (my vote: Street of Dreams) that'd be my list too. Quote
John L Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Good list. In addition to those, I have a major soft spot for Feelin' the Spirit and Born to be Blue. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 My top six: Idle Moments Solid Street of Dreams I wanna Hold Your Hand Matador Sonny Clark Quartets. Pretty much matches Morganized's. Quote
undergroundagent Posted January 29, 2004 Author Report Posted January 29, 2004 My Top Six: Grant's First Stand Green Street Grantstand Green Street Alive! Idle Moments Quote
mikeweil Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Drew was always excellent on his sessions for Blue Note, I bought Jackie McLean's Bluesnik for him and was not disappointed. With Drew the Green guitar quartet is somewhat tighter than with Sonny Clark or Herbie Hancock. I like it. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 i like green's playing on the don wilkerson sessions Quote
JohnS Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 I managed to find time to give this one a paly at last. A really nice solid session. There is so much consistent Green from this period I find it hard to name a favourite. But this one wont disappoint. The beer(?) bottle rolling across the floor during "God Bless The Child" is a nice touch. Quote
