Just listening to Jimmie Noone´s Apex Club Orchestra 1928 recordings with Jimmie Noone (cl, voc), Earl Hines (p), Joe Poston (as, voc), Bud Scott (bjo, g) and Johnny Wells (d). Lawson Buford added on tuba on some tracks.

I dig this unusual quintet/sextet, with an alto sax instead of the classic trumpet or cornet plus clarinet front line. Joe Poston states the melody (or counter-melody) but never soloes.

From my reading, this Apex Club Orchestra with Earl Hines only recorded 12 masters and 4 alternative takes. Is this information accurate?

I have the 12 masters and one alternate in a King Jazz release (The quintaessential Jimmie Noone 1928-38) with this discographical data:

Chicago May 16, 1928

Noone, Poston, Hines, Scott and Wells

1 I know that you know (Vocalion 1184)

2 Sweet Sue, just you (Vocalion 1184)

3 Four of five times (Vocalion 1185)

4 Every evening (I miss you) (Vocalion 1185)

5 Every evening (I miss you) (Vocalion 1185)

Chicago June 14, 1928

Poston also plays clarinet

6 Ready for the river (Vocalion 1188)

7 Forevermore (Vocalion 1188)

Chicago August 23, 1928

Buford added

8 Apex blues (Vocalion 1207)

9 A monday date (Vocalion 1229)

10 Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me (Vocalion 1215)

??????

Same personnel

11 Oh, sister! Ain´t that hot? (Vocalion 1215)

12 King Joe (Vocalion 1229)

13 Sweet Lorraine (Brunswick 80023)

You can also find the 12 master takes in the Decca "Apex Blues" release or on Classics Jimmie Noone 1928-29.

EKE BBB, the Lord also lists the following alternates:

- Four or Five Times the Classics has take B. There is a take C alternate,

- Apex Blues, the Classics has take B. There is an alternate take A,

- Sweet Lorraine, the Classics has take A. There is an alternate take B.

Love that Noone music, too!

Neatwork includes the following alternates:

C-1939-C Four Or Five Times

C-1940-C Every Evening

C-2258-A Apex Blues

C-2268-B Sweet Lorraine

Classics includes an extra version of Oh, Sister (C-2112-2) from a June 23, 1928 session.

The correct date for the last session is August 25, 1928.

Thanks, Chuck

I´m a dummy regarding serial numbers for recordings, but how is this "Oh, sister!" alternate marked as C-2112-2 instead of C-2112-B when all the other takes from these sessions -although this one comes from a different one- are marked with letters instead of numbers?

I wondered about the 2 myself. This was from a "scrapped" session and none ot the tunes were issued at the time. This take surfaced on lp in the '70s. Maybe the take number was assigned then. Rust shows no take letter/number for this session. Both Bruyninckx and the Classics disc list it as 2.
