Head Man Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Talk about the Mekons. What...............from the Planet Meke? Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 "Where were you" b/w "I'll have to Dance" is one of my favorite 45s ever, "The Quality of Mercy Is Never Strnen" is such an underrated album. Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 interesting band, though I never was compelled to seek more. Quote
ATR Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Mekons are a punk/country bar band for grown-ups. I don't know what they've been up to recently. Last I heard they were collaborating with visual artists and doing museum installations. I saw them several times in and around Central SQ in Cambridge MA years ago and they put on one of the best rock concerts I've ever seen touring behind their Rock and Roll album. Check out some of Jon Langford's solo records, too. Rock and Roll and So Good It Hurts are both outstanding releases. Don't look for virtuoso chops here, just really good band chemistry and sophisticated themes to the lyrics. Quote
David Ayers Posted August 10, 2012 Author Report Posted August 10, 2012 I came in late on Mekons when I bought Natural on CD in 2007. I know it is not 'typical' but I do understand its charm. A band more known by name than by its music, maybe? From Leeds, Yorkshire (my neck of the woods) but (part?) based in US, now (?). Natural was recorded in UK. Plenty on Spotify but I am as much interested in getting a feel for who/what they are and who is into them as I am into actually hearing all the records. My kind of band but when I used to play I entirely ignored them (even though people I played with referenced them...). Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 (edited) They are much beloved by fRoots - they fit the particular angle of that magazine that sees folk-type music and punk as natural bedfellows. Edited August 11, 2012 by A Lark Ascending Quote
David Ayers Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 I like the idiom of what I've heard - musically straightforward, rough feel, lyrically a kind of cynical, gnomic folk. Quote
BFrank Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 A friend turned me on to them several years ago. While I haven't see the Mekons themselves, I've seen Langford in various solo incarnations countless times. Never fails to entertain. He's an accomplished artist, too. Exhibits and sells his work through the Yard Dog Gallery in Austin. Great little place, BTW, if you happen to be in that town. Also has amazing 'back yard' concerts during South by Southwest every year. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 I don't care if there is a band called the Mekons; I always think of "MAUDE SENIOR, ANGUS, MP AND THEN BARON. PRIVATE SCHOOL, OXBRIDGE, TORY PARTY. KNOWN AS THE MEKON BECAUSE OF HIS HEAD AND BECAUSE HE WAS AN UTTERLY HORRIBLE, SELFISH, OVERBEARING TORY BASTARD. ONE OF WHISKEY MAGGIE'S GUTLESS, GRASPING, PINSTRIPE SPIVS. DEAD, NOW, PRAISE GOD, AND ROASTING IN HELL." (http://mrishmael.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/all-tories-are-bastards.html) MG Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 He needs to go to Specsavers for a better fitting. Quote

There must have been some good Treens, then, and I'm getting confused. I used to lap up Dad Dare when I was ten or eleven. MG Quote

MG As far as I remember - and 1951 is a long way away - the good people were a civilisation that lived in the southern hemisphere of the planet. I think a ring of fire separated them from the north where the Nazi-style Treens lived. Recalling this 60 years later shows I lapped it up, too! Quote
