undergroundagent Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Can anyone offer an opinion on this live album by Jimmy Smith? I've critically slept on this record for a long time, but it may be time to grab it. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I didn't like it on first hearing, Al, but grew to like it quite a bit. It's got its share of wah-wah guitar work and all that but Jimmy burns on it. I wouldn't give up on mine and you know I'm a little fussy with this sort of jazz. It's a keeper. Quote
Selim Sivad Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Jimmy really cuts loose on this record, like he's rarely done before. You should get it. SS Quote
Noj Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I like ROOT DOWN too, however Jim Alfredson does not give it the highest praise... Quote
Big Wheel Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Repetitive sometimes? Yes. But few albums stuff more funk into that trunk. I could listen to that version of "After Hours" every night for the rest of my life. Quote
Harold_Z Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Wilton Felder sounds great on it too. Quote
John B Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 definite from me, too. based on your tastes I think you should grab this disc asap. Quote
undergroundagent Posted January 27, 2004 Author Report Posted January 27, 2004 Any opinions of the quality of the Japanese Mini LP version of this title? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Domestic version sounds fine and is readily available. Why pay extra for an import? Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 I used to have this disc but later sold it as I wasn't listening to it all that much after awhile. I think Jimmy's playing on it although he stretches out at length, is pretty boring, I mean theres times where he's on auto pilot (which definitely was becoming pretty frequent by then) and just plays a bunch of his favorite licks often. I'd love to see if Verve would reissue Jimmy's "The Boss" with Benson and Donald Bailey, I've heard some stuff on there and it's great. Quote
undergroundagent Posted February 14, 2004 Author Report Posted February 14, 2004 Well, I finally bought this disc! Man, it's heavy jazz-funk which is quite okay with me. "After Hours" is my favorite track, but "Root Down" sizzles...that is some heavy JB's type groove. And what in the hell were the Beastie Boys thinking!!! Quote
scottb Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Every time I listen to the title track (both versions) I hear a new bass groove. The bassist is changing his groove constantly and all of them are FUNKY and each worthy of their own song. Quote
