I don't have any CDs of Mose Allison on Columbia or Epic. Are any available?

I have a vague recollection that there was a two-CD set issued about ten years ago, but I may be wrong.

Recommendations, anyone?

I think I found what I was looking for: High Jinks. Unfortunately, it's currently going for $49.94.

$26.00 "used-like new" is a little more reasonable. You may want to put it on an Amazon wish list and watch it over time. I picked up this set used but the discs were mint for $16.00. I wanted it but wasn't "hot" for it so I just kept an eye on it from time to time for over a year when I got it at that couldn't pass it up price.

I found this title in the recommendations on that Amazon to be kinda funny:

Mose Allison Sings: Rudy Van Gelder Remasters

Ok, that's not a full album title, but if it was...

The Columbia/Epic albums are not among my favorite Mose Allison records. Great fan of Mose here!

Looks like Columbia/Epic did not know what to do with him and let him go after producing three LPs.

Much prefer the earlier Prestige and later Atlantic/BN recordings!

Have been doing this for a couple of years now - have created Amazon (US & UK) wish lists which I add to (and subtract when I score) but also check every other day - picked up some great bargains (especially via Zoverstocks)

While looking at Pete LaRoca discography, I came upon this formidably enticing info about a lost session, that could be best described as Mose Allison...avant-garde trio: Mose, Henry Grimes and Pete LaRoca !

Date: October 7, 1965

Location: New York City

Label: Atlantic

Mose Allison (ldr), Mose Allison (p, v), Henry Grimes (b), Pete LaRoca Sims (d)

a.9376 Power House (Mose Allison)

b.9378 What's It To You

c.9379 That's The Stuff You Gotta Watch (Buddy Johnson)

d.9380 Tell Me Something (Mose Allison)

e.9381 Gumpo

f.9382 I Feel So Good (Mose Allison)

g. 9383 Big Brother (Mose Allison)

h.9384 Fool's Paradise (Mabel F. Cordle, Jerry Fuller)

i.9385 Sweet Lovers No More

j.9386 If You Really Love Me Baby

This session probably destroyed in Atlantic warehouse fire.

Composer not known for following: 9377 Sanctuary, 9387 Soliloquy

Anyone knows about this ? I'd sure be great if it survived the fire...

It's three CDs:

I like it, but as Brownie said, there are albums more typical of him. There's some duplication of tracks on the third CD, but they all seem to be alternate takes assembled to an album after he had moved on.

I like it quite some ... don't know his Prestige albums too well yet (only have "Back Country Suite" and the "Greatest Hits" compilation), but these Columbias are fine in my opinion!

I'm listening to the second album right now. I like this stuff. It's really not that different than the Prestige. . . . I'm a Mose fan, and I need to get a few more of the Atlantics.

Another fan of Mose here. I only own albums from his Prestige and Atlantic period so I can't comment about the Columbia/Epic stuff except that if you haven't heard the P And A material you should not waste any time acquring some if you can find them. All of my albums are on vinyl so I don't know what's available if you are analog challenged. :w

One thing I noticed a while back when I began picking up these lps is that the drummer Ron Free, who's quite an excellent drummer was a major player from that loft in NYC that was documented in photos and recordings by the famous Life photographer

W. Eugene Smith. If you see any Mose Allison albums with Free you can buy them with confidence.
