Thanks to Marc Meyers for recommending this one (which combines two '60s LPs) on his blog:

Stitt is in very relaxed and inventive form, backed by rhythm sections led by Jack McDuff or Gene Ludwig (with Pat Martino on the Ludwig tracks). Stitt used the Varitone on the Ludwig date but not so as you'd know it.

What does this mean?

It's turned down so low, when it's used at all, that all it does is give a slight fuzz to his tone. One hardly notices it.

So, people who get all reflexively explosive diarrhea at the mere mention of the V-word would just feel a slight rumble and maybe pass some gas, is that what we're dealing with hear?

I like Stitt w/the Varitone quite a bit sometimes. When he's playing those cruise-contol licks, it fattens up the sound, so you get some density somewhere.

And on that live thing that Joel Dorn released, hey, that's just all kinds of right - Loudass Don Patterson, Thumping Billy James, and riding herd over it all, Varitoned Sonny Stitt. I'll take it!

Night Letter is one of my all-time favorite Stitt albums. I've had it on the single CD Prestige version for years.
