CraigP Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I'd like recommendations on 8-10 tracks that I should download from Bill Evans' Turn Out The Stars set. I know there was an Artist's Choice single CD, but I can't tell which version of each song was selected for that. Also, the various versions of Nardis aren't available as individual downloads. If those posting can include track times so I can tell which version, it will be much appreciated! Quote
kh1958 Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Coincidentally, I just finished listening to this set/transferring favorite tracks to iTunes this morning. I had rather mixed feelings about this set. I generally didn't care for the uptempo pieces. But some of the slower pieces/ballads on the set are rather beautiful. The versions of Nardis all feature long and (in my opinion) tedious bass (I'm not really a Marc Johnson fan) and drum solos. But the following ten tracks are beautiful and enjoyable.: My Foolish Heart 4:11 Quiet Now 5:12 Your Story 3:59 Person I Knew 4:32 The Two Lonely People 7:08 Time Remembered 5:37 Polka Dots and Moonbeams 5:59 Knit for Mary F 6:35 Emily 4:17 Minha 3:18 Quote
CraigP Posted July 4, 2012 Author Report Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks KH. If I told you I generally like more uptempo pieces, would that change your list? Quote
kh1958 Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I couldn't help then; using that criteria, it was pretty much all the same to me. Quote

Here's discographical info for the 1 CD compilation I found a few years ago in Phil Bailey's essay at www2.selu.edu. I remember checking Bailey's info against the Mosaic set's discography at the time and I didn't see any conflicts. But I don't own the compilation CD and can't verify the info 100%: Bill Evans - "The Artist's Choice: Highlights From Turn Out The Stars" (Warner Bros. 9 46425-2, 1996) 01. I apologize for not seeing this earlier but I bought it at a brick and mortar shop in town so there was only one copy. Had there been more, I would have left a link for everyone. I'm not the kind of guy that would crow about something like that without sharing in the good fortune if it was available. The store was having a moving sale so the $36 price tag was reduced another 25% which made it irresistable. Is $36 a good price for it? I haven't been watching this one at all as I made a concious decision not to get it when it was released as I had so much Bill Evans and didn't feel I needed anymore but then many years passed and it had been so long since I heard any "new" music by him that I got weak and changed my mind especially at that price. jazzbo Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 The box set was reissued in 2009 in digipaks and was available for about 34 to 40; amazon.com has it now for 35 new, 29 used. Quote

That's what I got (digipaks) I guess. I didn't know it had been reissued. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 Yes, it had been out of print for a spell. GREAT MUSIC! Quote

After a self made hold on buying Bill Evans product after many years of "catching up" I have found myself binging on his output released after his passing. In just the last three months I bought the above box, the Keystone Korner set (The Last Waltz) and most recently the Top Of The Gate recording which I bought on vinyl. It's amazing how strong his playing was on those two from his last summer. Quote
CraigP Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 How is the Top of The Gate set? Quote
six string Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 I really like the Top Of The Gate set and that's not one of my favorite trios from Bill's ouevre. It's a very energetic set overall and the sound quality is very good. I have the vinyl version and I've only played it twice so far. I've held off playing it anymore until I can set aside the time to put it on cdr to have for the car or when I'm listening but not able to sit in front of the stereo to flip the record every 10 or 15 minutes. I was reluctant initially because with a few exceptions I've never liked the Verve era very much, prefering the Riverside and Warner Bros. albums much more. I caved once I saw a copy at the store and I'm glad I did. There really is some good playing on the album. Quote

In addition to the substandard sound, I prefer the earlier and later periods in Evans' career to that that covered by the Secret Sessions. Quote

It shows a different side to his playing, and as I have a fair bit of time to listen to music fortunately I don't have to 'triage'. Quote
