I was listening to "Piazza Navona" from the MJQ Mosaic set (originally from The Comedy lp), and it occurred to me that a short snippet of it would make a great ringtone. Which other jazz performances, 5 - 10 seconds in length, would make a wonderful ringtone?

My ringtone lineup: Dizzy Atmosphere, Un Poco Loco, Five Spot After Dark, J.O.S., Move, Just By Myself, Mango Mangue, Money Jungle.

Current: Haitian Fight Song.

I just import tracks from iTunes library to GarageBand and create my own.

My ringtone is the opening trumpet cadenza of Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues." My saxophone-playing colleague Ben Davis uses one perfect, isolated note by Steve Lacy as his text message alert.

I'd consider the opening of "Song for My Father" except that most people who hear it would think I really like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" enough to make it my ringtone.

Then again, when I think about it, that makes perfect sense as a ringtone, right? :g

I use "Milestones". (I used to use Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "Kiss and Say Goodbye" which begins "Call me if you're coming to town" but I always thought I was hearing it from a radio. For some reason that doesn't happen with Milestones.)

Monk's 'Evidence'

I'd rather use "Four In One". Or "Trinkle, Tinkle".

I've never downloaded a ringtone, but a few years ago I had the opportunity (with Virgin Mobile) to use Cal Tjader's Soul Sauce.

Did it shout "Guarachi Guaro" too?

I don't have a cell phone and I don't want one but if I would want one I would like the St. Louis Blues as a ringtone.

I use "Milestones".

I assume you mean the second one, from the album of the same name. I used to use it too. I find that staccato, repetetive themes are best. I'm now using Cousin Mary.

Armstrong's stop-time solo from Potato Head Blues might be fun.

Edit: It was such a good idea I just did it!

I think so, yes.

My first mobile was a 2003 Motorola with the "beeping" kind of ringtone. You could compose your own tone, so I transcribed "Blue Train" one slow afternoon at work - it took absolutely ages. You couldn't programme any sort of syncopation, so it ended up very square-sounding.

My ringtone for about five years or so has been The Art Ensemble's "Theme de Yoyo." Opening theme through the "breakdown." Makes me chuckle almost every time I hear it.

You win the coolest ringtone ever award. :g

Has your phone ever rung in public and a stranger acknowledged your ringtone. I would have to acknowledge it politely at least if I heard it on a train :D
