mjzee Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I was listening to "Piazza Navona" from the MJQ Mosaic set (originally from The Comedy lp), and it occurred to me that a short snippet of it would make a great ringtone. Which other jazz performances, 5 - 10 seconds in length, would make a wonderful ringtone? Quote
ElginThompson Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 My ringtone lineup: Dizzy Atmosphere, Un Poco Loco, Five Spot After Dark, J.O.S., Move, Just By Myself, Mango Mangue, Money Jungle. Current: Haitian Fight Song. I just import tracks from iTunes library to GarageBand and create my own. Quote
BillF Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Long before ringtones, I remember reading that Lionel Hampton had a chimes doorbell that played the beginning of "Flying Home" Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 My ringtone is the opening trumpet cadenza of Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues." My saxophone-playing colleague Ben Davis uses one perfect, isolated note by Steve Lacy as his text message alert. Quote
robertoart Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I always wanted to have 'Baby Talk' from the Music Revelation Ensemble's - No Wave album. The one on Moers. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I've never downloaded a ringtone, but a few years ago I had the opportunity (with Virgin Mobile) to use Cal Tjader's Soul Sauce. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I'd consider the opening of "Song for My Father" except that most people who hear it would think I really like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" enough to make it my ringtone. Then again, when I think about it, that makes perfect sense as a ringtone, right? Quote
medjuck Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 I use "Milestones". (I used to use Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "Kiss and Say Goodbye" which begins "Call me if you're coming to town" but I always thought I was hearing it from a radio. For some reason that doesn't happen with Milestones.) Quote
Dave James Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) Since I genuinely don't like talking on the phone, I'd have to go with "So What". Edited July 4, 2012 by Dave James Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) 'Ramblin'' (just the first phrase) My ringtone is from a John Cage piece. Edited July 4, 2012 by A Lark Ascending Quote
mikeweil Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Monk's 'Evidence' I'd rather use "Four In One". Or "Trinkle, Tinkle". I've never downloaded a ringtone, but a few years ago I had the opportunity (with Virgin Mobile) to use Cal Tjader's Soul Sauce. Did it shout "Guarachi Guaro" too? Quote
miles65 Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) I don't have a cell phone and I don't want one but if I would want one I would like the St. Louis Blues as a ringtone. Edited July 4, 2012 by Stompy Jones Quote
Pete C Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) I use "Milestones". I assume you mean the second one, from the album of the same name. I used to use it too. I find that staccato, repetetive themes are best. I'm now using Cousin Mary. Armstrong's stop-time solo from Potato Head Blues might be fun. Edit: It was such a good idea I just did it! Royal Oak Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 My first mobile was a 2003 Motorola with the "beeping" kind of ringtone. You could compose your own tone, so I transcribed "Blue Train" one slow afternoon at work - it took absolutely ages. You couldn't programme any sort of syncopation, so it ended up very square-sounding. Quote
BeBop Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Once upon a time, mine was "In Walked Bud". Quote
aparxa Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) For a couple of years, my ringtone has been this tune played by Horace Silver Quintet (I can't remember the title): Edited July 4, 2012 by aparxa Quote
Michael Weiss Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 I got Miles' "Right Off" from Jack Johnson, but... it's time for a change. Quote
Jay Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 My ringtone for about five years or so has been The Art Ensemble's "Theme de Yoyo." Opening theme through the "breakdown." Makes me chuckle almost every time I hear it. Quote

Makes me chuckle almost every time I hear it. You win the coolest ringtone ever award. Has your phone ever rung in public and a stranger acknowledged your ringtone. I would have to acknowledge it politely at least if I heard it on a train Quote
