CraigP Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Is Omnitone still in business? Their website hasn't been updated in a while. They put out some nice records by Marty Ehrlich, Tom Varner, Oscar Noriega, etc. I noticed, however, that they rarely put out more than one from any individual artist - Varner was a notable exception. JohnS Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Varner's Second Communion in an absolute cracker. Quote
CraigP Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 Varner's Second Communion in an absolute cracker. Yes, it's great Quote
Larry Kart Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 I like this one a lot: http://www.omnitone.com/physique/index.htm Quote
CraigP Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 I like this one a lot: http://www.omnitone.com/physique/index.htm That IS nice - ill have to dig it back out. This is an example of "one and done" for the label. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Second Communion is fantastic, to put it mildly. Another favorite... Baikida Carroll: Marionettes on a High Wire (OmniTone 12101) Quote
JETman Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Ones I can recommend: Ron Horton - Genius Envy (with our own Mr. Kimbrough) Marty Ehrlich - Malinke's Dance Frank Kimbrough - Quickening John McNeil - East Coast Cool MOB Trio - Loose MOB Trio - Quite Live in Brooklyn Angelica Sanchez - Mirror Me Tom Varner - Swimming Tom Varner - Second Communion Cuong Vu - Bound Btw, while there are several "one and dones", several artists have recorded multiple albums for this label. marcello Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 (edited) Frank Tafuri had some health problems a couple of years ago, but he recovered and I don't think that was the reason for any cut back in production. He also has, as his main business, a computer consulting service. Frank Kimbrough and Joe Locke have made three exqusite duo recordings for Omnitone: Frank Kimbrough/Joe Locke: Saturn's Child (OmniTone 11901) Frank Kimbrough/Joe Locke: The Willow (OmniTone 12201) Joe Locke/Frank Kimbrough: Verrazano Moon (OmniTone 12209) Verrazano Moon was the latest: Edited June 30, 2012 by marcello Quote
CraigP Posted July 2, 2012 Author Report Posted July 2, 2012 Frank Tafuri had some health problems a couple of years ago, but he recovered and I don't think that was the reason for any cut back in production. Well, i hope he starts releasing records again. As this discussion has shown, he's got a knack for putting out adventurous recordings by players who aren't in either the totally mainstream or avant-garde camps. Quote
relyles Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 By coincidence today I received in the mail a copy of Cameron Brown's Here and How! with Dave Ballou, Sheila Jordan, Leon Parker and Dewey Redman. Looking forward to listening to this one. Quote
Pete C Posted September 19, 2012 Report Posted September 19, 2012 Is Omnitone still in business? I was just about to ask that question. In the last number of years Omnitone, Pi, Palmetto, Sunnyside, Clean Feed, Firehouse 12, the stalwart Delmark and just a few others seem to be the labels most likely to put out the kind of jazz I'm interested in. Forget the majors. Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Is Omnitone still in business? I was just about to ask that question. In the last number of years Omnitone, Pi, Palmetto, Sunnyside, Clean Feed, Firehouse 12, the stalwart Delmark and just a few others seem to be the labels most likely to put out the kind of jazz I'm interested in. Forget the majors. Me too. And all of those labels have seriously slowed down their release schedules in the last year or two. I was worried the Firehouse was a goner until the new Mary Halvorsen came out. And just a few years ago Clean Feed seemed to be releasing a dozen a month. Quote
