paul secor Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 20% of the top 15 reissues. Pretty damn good. Quote
BeBop Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 (edited) Congratulations. Really remarkable, when you think about the amount (and level/quality) of competition in this category. One from Mosaic and three from Mr. Nessa. Edited June 27, 2012 by BeBop Quote
jeffcrom Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 Impressive showing, and very well deserved! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 Congrats for sure! 3/15, and one at #4 is mighty damn impressive. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 27, 2012 Author Report Posted June 27, 2012 Really sort of crazy. They have ignored me for about 30 years (no reviews at all) until this year. First a short piece about my issues a couple of months back lumping together short reviews of 5 of my releases and now this. It seems someone sitting on a cloud looked down and gave the ok. Quote
paul secor Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 Good things come to those who wait. Quote
johnlitweiler Posted June 27, 2012 Report Posted June 27, 2012 The Roscoes and the Von shoulda been 1-2-3 on that list. Quote
Dave James Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Nicely done, Mr. N. Worth the wait...right? Now no one can ask what you've done for them lately. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Some great music in those discs -- thanks for bringing it further into the world, and congrats on the recognition. Here's hoping for some economic followup from the readership..... Quote
JSngry Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 10 Roscoe Mitchell Before There Was Sound This was the most important "historical issue" in quite a while in that it didn't just collect together old stuff everybody already knew/knew about, it exposed something altogether unknown of and about people places and things that would go on to be even more known and even more important. AFAIC, stuff like this deserve a category unto itself. Quote
Adam Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Congrats! And how can they announce this poll in June? Still half the year to go. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Congratulations. I don't know the records but they are obviously labours of love. Quote
marcello Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Have No Fear is one of my all time favorite tenor saxophone recordings. I'm gonna pull that one out right now! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 Not sure what this really means beyond making me smile. That has to be good enough. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Really sort of crazy. They have ignored me for about 30 years (no reviews at all) until this year. First a short piece about my issues a couple of months back lumping together short reviews of 5 of my releases and now this. It seems someone sitting on a cloud looked down and gave the ok. I'm not sure what it might mean to you, but regardless of whatever approbations may have been issued on the part of the powers that be, I know for certain that your catalog holds a really certain and important place in the hearts and minds of man on the street musicians and critics. I guess history, ultimately, reconfirms the quality that was always there. The early Art Ensemble sides, People In Sorrow, and Nonaah (not exclusively, but among others) are definitive recordings for people in my peer group in the improv world--we talk about this stuff in the same breadth as Bird's Savoy recordings, the Hot Fives and Sevens, Miles on Columbia, Trane on Impulse, Ornette on Atlantic, etc. etc.--it's absolutely defining music for a certain aesthetic and ethos, and I think there's a definitely a synergy with Nessa in there. In other words, and I'm sure I'm just reiterating what others have been saying for decades, but your place in the jazz annals is more than secure. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 Thanks. That was very nice. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Who knew that Downbeat is still around? it's 2012. Quote
